Emax SCSI issues

Emax SCSI issues

2011-09-13 by Scott Stanley

I am installing a slim floppy drive and PCD-50b into an Emax HD (non
SE) rack, model #1021, serial # 028541, CPU PCB PC 333 Rev A.

The Emax HD can see the slim floppy drive, also load and save without issues.

The Emax HD appears to see PCD-50b (the proper LED turns on when
requested) however, it will not complete a format of the PCMCIA CF
card. After about 5 minutes or so (depending on what size of CF card
that I use) it displays a message saying "scsi hardware error".

I tested with 2 PCD-50b's that I own. Both units will display the same
error and both are definitely flashed for read/write access. The only
jumper on each is the termination jumper. I have tried multiple CF
cards, scsi cables, PCMCIA adapters and all give the same error. This
is all done via the internal SCSI cable.

For this sampler I am using Emax HD OS 1.1.

Do I need to install the external kit for this to work or do I need to
upgrade my Emax to a Plus or something? I assuming that this might
have something to do with the original Connor HD being only 20mb's
perhaps?

If I need to provide more info, please let me know.

Any guidance is greatly appreciated,

Regards,

-s*

I wouldn't recommend you use a flash any larger than 256MB....
Emax only formats to 20MB anyways....
The drives don't need to be external.
If you have the original HD in place, then the chain needs to be correct

Emax >>>> drive >>>> drive >>> termination

The Stock HD by default has a terminator on it, so if you have term on both drives that would be a problem.

Hey Ted, I took the Connor drive out as it was pretty loud and not
saving correctly. At the moment it is just Emax >>>> cf drive >>>>
termination. I tried a 2gb, 128mb and 32mb card. All the same issue.
Should I do the SE upgrade? Us it difficult to do?

Re: [emax] Emax SCSI issues

2011-09-13 by Ted Summers

I wouldn't even try the 2gb card.
The SE update has nothing to do with the issue.
It really is a flipped bit in the 93C06 EEPROM and what is added in the OS
on the disk.

Now, whether or not the PLUS OS 1.0 (SE + HD) has any fix that would help
your issue, I cannot say.

On The PCD-50b there is a Write Protect Jumper in a separate location, if I
recall correctly. Have you removed that?

Thx,
Ted

Re: Emax SCSI issues

Dumb point to mention perhaps, but it's possible to plug in internal SCSI connector in backwards fashion, no? I hope it's something simple like that, for you. Power is usually what I f** up first, but you mention the LED, so you're miles ahead already!

Maybe someone with a proven CF card formatted with an emax HD os image could send you one in the mail? Figure out if it's only a write-access issue. You could try making one with emxp and a cheap usb-card writer, perhaps.

Best luck, KevinC

Hi,
I ask carefully, but did you use the Floppy as Source if you format the CF?

Re: [emax] Re: Emax SCSI issues

When the SCSI is backwards, the floppy will not load the OS. I have not
tried using EMXP yet but, that OS a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion.

Question... Does anyone know if the internal Emax HD was hard set to a
specific SCSI ID?

Hi there,

Yes I used a floppy which loads no problem as the source
for formatting the CF card.

0 you need to set the card drive to 0 or otherwise you will need the + os to
see the card drive if it is not set to scsi id 0

The only jumper I have set is on termination. All other jumpers have been
removed so, it should already be set to scsi id 0, correct?

no not really you need to make shure

if not get the + os then it does not matter as the emax can address any scsi
i.d then

where as the emax hd software could only address scsi0 and if the drive is
not set to that id then it wont see the drive properly

Yes, all jumpers removed is ID 0 on the PCD-50b
Emax 1's only boot from ID0, and that is what the HD is set to by default from the factory.

If the internal HD is connected and the PCD-50b also, and both at ID0, it isn't going to work right.

Re: [emax] Re: Emax SCSI issues

2011-09-14 by Scott Stanley

The only drives connected are the
Slim floppy drive and the pcd-50b. The internal hard drive ceased to
function.

I tested this same floppy drive, PCD-50b, PCMCIA adapter, CF card and scsi
cable in my Emax II and it worked fine. Issue with my internal SCSI
perhaps? :(

teds right you cant have 2 drives both on scsi 0 as only one will be seen usually the closest drive to the scsi controller

Re: [emax] Re: Emax SCSI issues

issue with internal cable check that none of the strands has broken loose
common fault caused by people pulling on the cable rather than useing a
proper tool

just take off old idc connectors and reseat with a idc crimp tool this will
make new connection to the ribbon cable as they cut in the cable making a
connection

or if you have a spare scsi cable try that

also is your drive got the updated firmware as some would only read and not
write which could also be the problem

And be sure that you put the Cable on the Mainboard is in Center of
the connector.
If you ever disconnected the Cable. Check it!
On time I made this mistake and placed the Plug one pin to the right
and got the same error as you.
Check also that the red line is on Pin one.

Re: Emax SCSI issues

2011-09-26 by timbreadvantage

I have been having a similar issue with my Emax SE HD rack,
My floppy drive has failed- I have the old Miniscribe drive (works but is soooooo loud). Have the SCSI to IDE ACard and an IDE CF reader.

If someone could post an EXMP CF image with the "+" OS, I might be able to get up and running again (sans noisy HD).

I believe this would help the original poster- and future Emax users as well.

Re: Emax SCSI issues

You can generate this CF image yourself with EMXP.
This can be done by creating an empty Emax-I HD/CD image (option 1.5.2) and then copy the Plus OS to it (option 1.4.3)

Re: [emax] Re: Emax SCSI issues

2011-09-27 by Ted Summers

Well, I have tried an NEC, Sony, and TEAC successfully- someone else tried a
Mitsumi.

I don't think compatibility is much of an issue.
I used TEAC FD-05x (several models, some end in G, some H, etc).

Just make the slim floppy converter as I have it on my page:

Re: Emax SCSI issues

2011-10-05 by Scott Stanley

Hello everyone! Well, thanks to some help from esynthesist, I managed to
get my Emax HD to work with the PCD-50B SCSI card reader,

A few things to note:

- I did have to upgrade my unit to at least an SE in order for the format of
the CF card to complete.
- In order to update to SE, I had to have my floppy formatted with my actual
Emax (when I attempted to use a disk formatted for Emax with Omniflop, I
continuously received a "read error")
- I used the floppy Image that esynthesist posted in the files section
- I also upgraded my OS to the Plus! OS.

Now my Emax HD SE loads in seconds! It's awesome! I now have an Emax II
Rack, Emax II Keyboard and an Emax HD SE rack (and an E6400) all working
from PCD-50B's!

Thanks to everyone who offered advice, as always it was greatly
appreciated.I will be uploading a video of my upgrade shortly.

-s*
