you can take out the pcmcia card then remove the cf card and put a new card into the pcmcia adapter then place that into the pcmcia slot as that slot is hot swappable
just make sure your not accessing it
and do not remove the cf card from the pcmcia adapter when the pcmcia is inserted as it will need rebooting

i found two problems:
1.) the scsi chip was inserted incorrectly. i didnt see the tiny tab on the 5380 socket. i reversed this and used a new chip. all seems well.
2.) the write tab on the pcmcia card was pushed (and therefore locked). also, i didnt realize that you cant change out CF cards without a hard boot.
happy to report the Baldwin IKE/Emax seems to be formatting the HD, and the LED is lit on the scsi drive! yay!
