Hi Ted. I replaced the working display with the non-working. Strange patterns appeared when I switched on the keyboard. So I took the working display and replaced the non working. Same thing. Dead. So I figured it might be the chip. I desoldered the whole "display package" and soldered it onto the board. Same thing but the backlight works (bought a new el foil a couple of days ago). Can it be the flat cable?
