Re: Emax II noise

It is most likely the internal hard drive. The drive I have makes a fair
amount of noise as well.
You could get an external enclosure for the drive and move it away from the
sampler.

Yeah, certainly when I had an old clunker internal drive it would start
whirrring away, that was solved by moving to an external Syquest unit.
I also suffered from the vibration screach mentioned in my online FAQ
caused by the LCD vibrating so fast, however that goes away after a
few minutes of warming up.

Silly hard drive .
why does it have to be running all the time if it is only used when loading or saving banks ??? (power-kill switch mod possible??)

Its an IBM drive I think.
Is there a list of all drive brands and types that work with the Emax I/II anywhere?

silly SP808 Mcgroovesampler had a loudwhinny zipdrive also but it had to be in continuous use for operation

also wondering why it gets so hot and needs so much ventilation ..

thnks

Because that's where the OS is kept too, anytime you touch a function
button it has to read the OS from the hard drive.

what if the OS is on a disk in the 3.5 drive?

Re: Emax II noise

The drive would still stay powered up. The OS pays no mind to where it
was loaded from as far as telling the difference in hardware. I bleive the
reason my new Quantum Fireball 500Mb drive turned out to be
incompatible with the Emax II was because once it spun up for booting
it would power down and the Emax would have no idea how to get it to
turn back on.

but the HD is an extra..

what about adding a power on/off switch for just that internal HD

or is it like OS has to be loaded each time anew every time the hard drive is powered off/on?

Re: Emax II noise

1999-12-01 by John Joseph Silveria II

So you would rather run the Emax from a floppy? Because you'll never
be able to run the Emax from a hard drive if you power it off. It might
even lock up the Emax. I find running from a floppy aggrivatingly slow.
Is it really making that much noise? Why not try a different drive? Of
course, I've never understood people and they're complaints about fan
noise and such. For me it's never interfered with anything I'm doing.

Re: Emax II noise

1999-12-02 by smop@...

It doesnt seem too bad running the OS from floppy sofar at least (I wouldnt want to load banks from floppie though)
I dont know how to put the OS on HD yet either.

The noise seems pretty dang loud to me ..

( this gives me a funny idea of gas/deisel motor powered music equipment {that you have to start up with a pull-cord like a lawnmower} )

yes, will look into a different drive.
Is there a list of all drives that work with Emax SCSI and internal ? I couldnt find anything on the Emax pages my last look (or in the manual)

LOL this reminds me of a show I played last year. It was outdoors in a
park so isolated the only power supply for us was a gas powered
generator. If I was clever and and did industrial I could have cleverly
added the sound of the motor into the set. But, the show did run
smoothly there was enough power for everything, PA, Computer, and
all my gear (Emax II, ESi-32, OB-8, SY77, Juno 106, and Jupiter 8
plus effects and 2 mixers) However, when asked to come back again
this year I had to refuse. The sound of that generator was horrendous.

There isn't a list anymore. E-mu use to have an E-III list on their
website and most of those drives were compatible with the Emax II.
These are the drives I've had reported to me that definently work:

Quantum Maverick
Quantum Lightening 730 (the biggest drive someone from E-mu has
ever seen work),
Quantum ProDrive 210,
IBM WDS-380S (80mb)

Your quietest and best route IMHO is to get a Syquest drive. I've been
using an EZ135 for 5 years flawlessly and it's on a chain with an ESi-
32 as well. You can get them on E-bay for pretty cheap since Syquest
went belly up.

Remember to keep it a drive 540Mb and it seems that drives under
200Mb are most likely to be compatible.
