EMX for Windows XP...

EMX for Windows XP...

2005-12-29 by esynthesist

Hi guys,

You can find a new file "emxp_v0_90_pub" in the files section.

I was tired of booting my PC in MS-DOS to use EMX.
So I created a new program EMXP (=EMX for XP) and an Emax Floppy Disk
Driver.
After installing the driver, you can use EMXP to read or create EMAX
disks * in Windows XP *.
Formatting EMAX disks is not supported yet.

Please read the README file before installing and using EMXP and the
driver.
It works fine on my PC but I do not guarantee that it works on all XP
machines.
Using the software and the driver is completely at own risk !
I'm not responsible for any damage or crashes caused by the driver
(and the program).

Five important notes:
- The software will not work with USB floppy drives, only generic
internal drives are supported.
- The software is not compatible with Windows 3.1, 95, 98, Me and
probably 2000 and NT. Only XP is supported.
- After you've installed the Emax Floppy Driver, you won't be able to
use 720K DSDD floppies anymore in Windows XP !!!!
  But I don't think that's a real problem because:
  * who uses these floppies anyway ? Only EMX(P) software does ...
and that works fine
  * the more common 1.44 MB floppies are still supported by the Emax
Floppy Driver ... (I think)
  * you can always replace the Emax Floppy Driver by the original
Microsoft Driver ...
- The Emax Floppy Driver is based on the original Microsoft Driver
but with some minor changes for EMXP. The driver is not fully tested,
in fact I'm sure it contains bugs. But you won't see them as long as
you only use EMXP to access old 720K floppies.
- The old EMX software by Mike Prudence will not work with the Emax
Floppy Driver. You have to use the new EMXP software.

I hope this thing is useful for some of you.
But again: use is at own risk and please read the README file before
installing and using the software.

Dear Esynthesist
I installed your program on my Windows XP computer. Although I keep receiving the following message:
ERROR 87

What did I do wrong?

Thanks

Re: EMX for Windows XP...

Marcello,

Thanks for using the software.
The ERROR 87 ("invalid parameter") typically occurs when you are
using EMXP with standard floppy disk windows XP driver software.

Are you sure you installed the DRIVER first succesfully ?
You can check this by going to the Control Panel, click the System
Icon, then choose the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager button
and unfold the "Floppy Disk Drive" device. Rightclick on the Floppy
Disk Drive you're using with EMXP and choose "Properties".

The provider mentioned in the upper half of the window should be
"Emax Community / DDK Sample based" (not Microsoft or something else).
If you click the first button (driver properties/information) the
name of the driverfile should be "flpyemax.sys" (not flpydisk.sys).

If this is not OK, please install the driver first. Installation
instructions can be found in the README file.

Are you also sure that you're using EMAX formatted disks ? Because if
you use DOS formatted 720K disks you can also get this error.

Another possibility is that the BIOS of your PC does not support non-
standard floppy disk access. In that case EMXP will never work.

Hope this helps. If not... wel then this stuff only works on my PC :-)

Regards,

///E-Synthesist

Dear Esynthesist

I tried on both of my computers. One is an desktop Athlon 64 3.2Ghz, the other is a HP notebook with athlon XP 2.8ghz, on neither the driver will work. When I try to install the new driver it shows the following message: "the place specified does not contain information about your hardware".. do you have any idea of whats wrong?
Thanks once again!

Re: EMX for Windows XP...

2005-12-30 by esynthesist

That's strange. When you're in the hardware wizard and you browse to
the folder in which both FLPYEMAX.INF and FLPYEMAX.SYS can be found,
the installation should go on successfully.
This procedure is not unique to the EMAX-drivers, it is a standard
driver installation procedure...

Are you sure both files are in the folder ?
Can you click on the FLPYEMAX.INF file - does it appear in the file
list within the hardware wizard browse window?

In what step of the installation instructions do you get this
message ? Step 4E ? Until what step is everything going fine ?

What is the current floppy driver for your floppy drives ? Is
it "flpydisk.sys" from Microsoft ? If not, the EMAX drivers will
probably not work because you have another type of hardware.

Anyone else in this group having this problem ?
Or have there been successful installations yet ?

Re: [emax] Re: EMX for Windows XP...

2005-12-30 by Marcelo Simoni

Dear Esynthesist
Now I've got it... somehow my computer read the files..
And the program works great.
But as always I'm having another problem with writing a SE 1.1 Ver disk system.
My Emax does not read the disk and says WRONG SOFTWARE.. I'ts been many years since I lost my last SE1.1 Ver disk, and have been using only regular 3.2 Ver.
Do you happen to know anything about this issue?
Thank you my friend for your help!!!
Regards

Marcelo Simoni
