SCSI Upgrade - Does a drive HAVE to be connected?

SCSI Upgrade - Does a drive HAVE to be connected?

2006-06-03 by brainztain

Hey emaxers,

I finally got around installing a 50-24pin scsi interface on my Emax I
rack. I was careful not to let any of the recidue from drilling and
cutting of the case to get in the connector/chip board.

The problem is that whenver I plug in the connector, I can't boot from
the floppy. I haven't plugged in the zip drive yet because I haven't
bought it, but I'm wondering if after installing the 50-25pin adapter
you must have the zip disk up and running for the whole thing to boot
up.

Anybody know?

My e-max boots-up fine when I disconnect the adapter though.

Thanks.

Hi

You have to have the scsi connection terminated at the end of the line with a SCSI-terminator or a device which is terminated.

  Best regards

No, I got rid of the drive because It was dead. I guess you do have
to have a drive connected.

Thanks

2006-06-03 by Brian Ronn

Hi

No you don't have to have a drive connected. the SCSI line just have to be terminated. If not the Emax will freeze up.

I have no internal harddrive. My harddrive and ZIP 100 are external and if I choose not to power up my external drives the Emax will after a while (approx. 20 sec.) boot up on the floppy drive.

  Best regards

Do you still have the HD connected inside or not?

My unit can have the scsi connector empty and boot from the HD,

Your drive was not dead, it just stopped spinning. If you open up the hex screws and give it a few spins, then connect it back up, it will work fine. If it stops again, just punch your emax where the drive is (on the rack this is where the menu legending is) and it'll spin up and work again.

Nice to boot off the HD and have it around. Also, If you're going to throw it away, throw it my way ;)

I'm sorry man, I threw it out already. I missused "dead" though...
the drive was actually spinning and sounded fine, it's just that it
wouldn't respond (I tried it on 2 e-max hd's)... it's gone anyway,
next time I'll post it here, good idea, to see if anybody wants it.

thanks

Re: SCSI Upgrade - Does a drive HAVE to be connected?

2006-06-07 by brainztain

I have some updates:

I got the zip drive I bought from e-bay today, but the guy forgot to
include the zip disk that was supposed to come with it.

I decided to plug it in anyway and see if my e-max would start up...
and it didn't.

I checked the back and set the switch to "termination on" and tried
both scsci id 5 and 6.

Sorry to be so inpatient, but the disks will probably take another
week to get here.

There is no internal HD, I have the 50-25pin scsi adapter and an
Iomega SCSCI zip 100mb hooked up. I have no zip disk in the zip
drive but I have the operating system in the floppy ready to boot. I
starts off reading the disk but then the screen goes blank and it
freezes there. Is this normal?

I can start up the emax perfectly if I disconnect the adapter and
just boot from floppy.

Thanks
