my EMAX is driving me NUTS!!

my EMAX is driving me NUTS!!

2006-06-14 by brainztain

Okay, so I've made a few posts of my process of upgrading my emax hd
rack to support the external zip and now I know for a fact that it's
not working.

After hard work cutting through the case and buying the 50-25pin
adapter, zip drive, disks.. blah blah blah I'm left with a non-working
EMAX!!! WHY!!!!? :(

The e-max actually works and boots when I don't use the 50-25pin
adapter (I don't have a hard drive either), but when I try to boot from
the floppy disk while the adapter is connected the floppy disk just
says "Loading Software", ticks three times and then goes blank!

Does anybody know what's going on? I know the zip drive works, and the
zip disk is new... the adapter was new too... It's just driving me nuts
and I'm really bummed out that after so much hard work it's not working.

Please help!

Thanks

Good News!!!!

This is going to be kinda funny and even dumb. The problem was that
when I disconnected the 50-pin connector to make sure the connection
was solid I had slightly bent the last two pins. These two pins were
actually going into another part of the cable connector, which meant
that they were not making contact. The thing is that I couldn't see
these two pins because the power connector was right over them so
after removing the power connector to take a close look I spotted the
problem. WEEEE!!

Anyway, now I can boot from the floppy and I've formatted the zip
disk in the drive(or atleast it made a noise when I told it to do
so). I also "coppied the software" from the floppy to the zip disk
and set the SCSI id to 5. Unfortunately I haven't been able to boot
from the zip... new challenges to come.

Thanks.

Damn, I forgot you can only boot from scsi id 0... I guess I'm gonna
have to get an internal zip drive... I got everything else working
now though.

How many people have an external zip with no internal HD in the Chain?

I think even if you had a dead drive in the chain it would load,

Hi Elmacaco

I have an external ZIP drive and a HD which I can choose not to power up. If I choose not to, the Emax will eventually boot from the floppy drive.

  Best regards

  Brian

Thanks Brian, that's good to know, but you still have the HD hooked in the scsi chain, even if not powered up.

Anyone not have the HD inside at all?

Hi Elmacao

Yes, the external HD IS connected but it has no power. After approx. 10 - 15 seconds the Emax finds out that the HD is not accessible and the Emax will direct it's target boot device to the floppydrive.

  Best regards

  Brian :-)
