want to hear an album with tons of Emax arco strings bank?

The Cure

Album: Disintegration

if you want to save time go directly to track 8: Prayers For Rain.

Does anybody has more examples of Emax on other records?

Funny, I always thought the Cure used Ensoniq Mirage for those
strings.

the Joe Satriani song "circles" has what i think is an emax sample in it.
at the beginning there is that sound that was circulating called "water phone" or something like that.

Depeche Mode Black Celebration. I cannot remember what disk it was,
but the sounds in "Here is the House" is definitely that disk.....

Course everyone probably knows Depeche Mode used Emax / Emax II's ....

Gloria Estafen's early hits featured Emax's sounds - "Anything for you "
had the entire guitar part.
Prince used a lot of drum sounds and serangai etc.

It definitely featured on more American records around the mid/late 80's
as here in the UK the trend was more towards Akai.

it could be an ensoniq, but i use that bank in a lot of songs too and
it's like a feeling....

by other hand, the mirage is very similar to emax (8bit 32khz, analog
filer) so i think you're right... i've just guided by my ear.

Dust Brothers reportedly did Paul's Boutique entirely on Emax I and a computer (sequencing IIRC)

Trent Reznor used one in the early NIN stuff, again, reportedly.

Confirmed: 9"nails used Emax 1 and dx7' (exclusive) on their early tours (the DX7's are easy
to put back after a good smashing). All other notes on his keyboards were black out (empty)
so whle they thrashing around looking cool, they would hit no wrong notes on the Emax
sampler.

I have never seen Prince use an Emax since 1998 yet he keeps much old stuff around the
Park but no EMAX.

To add Peter Murphy used the Solo Violin stock preset from emu on Cuts You Up single from
Deep 1989/RCA.

Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer' with Loon Garden comes to mind. My
infamous "No Money Down' comic country Xmas tune:
www.iangrant.ca/santa/sidethis/No%20Money%20Down.mp3
<http://www.iangrant.ca/santa/sidethis/No%20Money%20Down.mp3> lo-fi
version, check out the Emax Pedal Steel Guitar, sounds great, Emax used
all over the album. www.iangrant.ca/santa <http://www.iangrant.ca/santa>
Btw, just finished the Virtual Emax - Reality Banksets #1 which has all
99 EOS 1 1Mb disks. It's up on Ebay as of 10 minutes ago and will be at
my sites soon. Finishing up EOS 2 and 3 now. This took years to complete
!!!! Sounds great. Ian

Let's see these are the ones I can confirm because I saw them with my
own eyes.. David Bowie's keyboardist used the Emax SE HD on the Glass
Spider Tour, Depeche Mode used them from the Black Celebration Tour
through to the Singles Tour in 1998 starting with the Emax HD through to
the Emax II, but they didn't use them much when recording, they tended
to use the Emulator line in the studio and the Emax line on tour, Nine
Inch Nails .. in 1990 when I saw them in a little now defunct club in
San Francisco called the I-Beam only had 2 keyboards on stage, both Emax
HD .. on the Downward Spiral Tour I saw an Emax II rack module and read
an interview on the gear for the tour that said he still had to lug an
Emax II around for old samples. Prince in the movie "Graffiti Bridge"
can be seen sequencing a song into a Mac computer and in his rack next
to him is an Emax HD Rack. Faith No More's Roddy Bottom used the Emax II
on stage and in the studio. Front 242 used the Emulator II on stage
never saw if they switched to Emax when they came out. Those are off the
top of my head.

The few times I saw Peter Murphy live he had Akai samplers. The comment
that most European bands were using Akai whereas most American bands
were using E-mu holds pretty true, Depeche Mode being the exception. I
also saw quite a few bands using Fairlights on stage in the 80's ..
Thompson Twins, FGTH, Ministry, Peter Gabriel, Thomas Dolby, OMD and
Prince among them.

Hello Chip,

I think Robert Smith had an Emulator 2 so it could also have been
that.

Good to see someone still using their Emax live :) I used to use an
Emax 2 live back in the early 90s and it always felt good to play on
stage (weighty and solid). The Emax 2 also had a great sound for live
use, a bite and grain that would really cut through on the PA.
Eventually I replaced it with a K2000 but that just didn't have the
same feel or tone as the Emax 2 :P

I bought a couple of Emax 2 racks recently but am still trying to get
them working. I should never have sold my keyboard back in the day!

cool!

i think that e-mu (obviously)used the samples for more than one
product at time. i really like to compare those banks in different e-
mu products someday

: )

thanks for the data!
