Emax power supply replacement

Emax power supply replacement

2007-06-18 by Simon_Owen

Hi folks

Well, it's finally been confirmed, the PSU in my Emax is toast. It's
been at the repair shop for a week or so and it's come back as
unrepairable. So.. anyone have any suggestions?

Looking around on the web i came across this site
http://www.retrosynth.com/gear/emax/info.html

Which seems to suggest that a Kepco/Memorex Power Supply 5V@5A 12V@2A
-12V@.1A, would be suitable. Does anyone have any experience with
this unit, if it is at all obtainable or not.

Any ideas at this point would be welcome. Perhaps i should just stick
it on ebay as a spares or repair.

Thanks in advance.

Simon

I know people have talked about it on this board. And have used a
standard small form factor pc power supply. So can any of you that
have done this share with the group the model, and what you did to
modify it?

Isn't that what this group is about?

I can theorize what could be done. But I don't know what has been
done in "the real world" and has held up.....

Remember - esynthesist (props to you!) came through for everyone on
the software side. Who wants the notoriety on the hardware side :-).
If you've already done it, it is not like the group is asking you to
take on something completely new or break your emax.

Regards,
Ted

Re: Emax power supply replacement

2007-07-01 by kari_runk

Using a pc power supply can certainly be done. Yesterday my Emax's
power supply decided to burn one of the capacitors with hefty amount
of smoke coming out of Emax. I was able to power off the supply
before nothing more serious happened.

Anyway, I used a standard ATX power supply to test that the power
supply didn't damage other components. First I made a custom
connector for Emax. The pinout starting at pin 1 (in the CPU board)
is like:

P1: -
P2: -
P3: -
P4: -
P5: -
P6: +5V
P7: COM
P8: +12V
P9: -12V
P10:-
P11: +5
P12: COM
P13: +12V
P14: -12V

You can use a standard Molex power connector for the hard disk if you
have a HD model. My Emax ran ok with ATX power supply but for
permanent use I can see powering on the power supply a bit
problematic as an ATX power supply needs pin 14 (in atx power
connector) to be short circuitted to start. I assume AT power supply
for example would be a better choice because of this.

I still would like to repair my original power supply. I'd be glad to
know if anyone has a schematic for it. My power supply looks a bit
different from Chejus (in the group photo section) and it has a model
number C50-31E in the sticker. Did Emax's have different power
supplies or revisions? Any suggestions?

Regards,
Kari
