Which Mac for Alchemy?

Which Mac for Alchemy?

2007-11-13 by marc

Hi,

i am thinking about buying an old mac laptop to edit my Emax via
Alchemy.
Which one would be a good idea ? At the moment i am considering a
Powerbook 190 CS or maybe a 170. A friend of mine could give me his old
G3 laptop (non USb, wallstreet i think?) but i am not sure if thats too
new. Does Alchemy playback the Samples in the mac ?

Thanx

Marc

I've tested on a Mac IIci ( 68k 25mhz ) and Mac 8100 (
PowerPC 100MHZ ) . The key to making it work wasn't so much
the Mac but the OS. It seemed that only 7.5 and 7.6.1
worked correctly. On anything higher the transfer would
fail. This btw was using the serial port on the EMAX which
is at least 10x faster than midi.

Yes, Alchemy will play the samples once transfered over.

Hello everybody :)

Im trying to run alchemy on an powerbook 3400c, mac os 7.6.1 over rs
422 without success. I dont even know if I got the right settings,
since I dont have any manual for alchemy. The 3400c only has one
serial port (geoport) combined for both modem an printer. Do the MIDI
and SCSI-settings also effect the communication via rs422?

Anyone any idea?

Thanks

Moe

The RS422 port on the Emax requires external clocking (by the computer) at
500Khz, and I don't think the geoport-enabled Macs support clocking external
devices.

hmmm, whatbreassembling of cables?
I considered the geoport to be compatible to the "ordinary" serial
port.

Hello again together :)

After all I solved my "alchemy-problem" by using desktop macs and it is
really running great using the self-made rs422-cable. So the question,
why I still cannot get it running on any of my powerbooks (pb 3400c, pb
1400cs) is getting even more mysterious.

Has anyone of you experience concerning running alchemy on a pb?

regards moe

I' can't answer moes question, just got a few of my own. I've recently
found an old power mac 7100/66 and when I find an os for it I'll be
using it exclusively with my emax. What's the best program with rs-422
support for emax and what version os should I try to get?

nevermind, I just read the previous posts, my bad. so, os 7.5 and
alchemy seems to be the way to go.

Hi gadgetfiddler :)

I´m using passport alchemy on a performa 630, os 8.1. There´s a
version alchemy in the files section.

I had Motu Performer running from a powerbook once (ages ago). I used to use Master
Track, well master tracks couldn't transmit midi via rs 422 port while Performe could. I
assume alchemy may have the same problem, the drivers the software has to recognize
the port may not there. But that is just me guessing.

I've got a PowerPC 8100 running 8.1 and a 68030 Mac IIci
running 7.6.1 and both run Alchemy 3.0 perfect using RS422
Midi sample dump.

Just my 2 cents but i've found that although sample dumping
over rs242 is convenient, to capture the true grit of the
converters I re-sample most of the time.

So, no one of you all ever intended running alchemy on a powerbook
via rs422 ?! ;)

I've considered it but the fact that you can only audition
your sounds using the lousy onboard audio coming out the
1/8 jack convinced me to use older desktop Mac's with
Audiomedia II cards.
