OK- So I am taking the plunge..... The desired setup is to have the floppy and the CF adapter. Additionally, since it is silly to buy huge CF when 32MB is big enough, and CF 32MB on ebay you pay about $10 each, I am going to do this: Get SD flash and pc card adapter as I got 10x 32MB SD compatible Transflash (with the SD adapters) for about $15. That will meet all my emax needs (I hope). So far I have bought off ebay: ACARD SCSI /IDE Converter $17 (buy it now included the shipping) - used but worked fine. IDE to CF adapter as per other post that has a faceplate, etc.... PCCARD to CF adapter ----- these two were same seller so total was $30 including the shipping. 10 x Transflash w/adapter $15 including shipping. PCCARD to SD adapter $17 with ship. So I got everything but the PCCARD to SD adapter.... Put the CF together and all tested OK. But floppy and CF Adapter won't both fit in the space. So I thought about rigging it up (making brackets, cutting etc). Then I changed my mind. I am going to get Slim Floppy (like for laptops - $10 plus ship), and a Slim floppy converter ($7.33 with shipping and insurance). Then both will fit in the slot on front of emax. the best of both worlds- Floppy, CF / SD (hopefully), and no hacking or destruction of emax case, etc..... So- you may ask- why am I bothering to send this email? Because 1) All items I am buying the Sellers have more of.... or at least they did when I post this. Additionally, I bet they can get more..... 2) I will supply links to items as of when project is complete (next weekend hopefully) so you can buy same if desired without hunting for it (assuming all is still available), and know you should get a good set of items. 3) I will provide pictures to modify the SLIM floppy drive for use in emax (if it works). (No offense to route66, and without the other item (CF adapter), you would have a big hole in front of the emax..... Additionally, I will then have a regular height floppy that I replaced into emax with very little use so far, and a bracket for sale if someone needs one for emax that isn't going through all this CF trouble..... Is this a known good hardware setup? Or is this still
in the testing phase?
Thanks!

I am mid-process. I am waiting for the SD adapter to verify it works, and also on the slim floppy and adapter. I hope to have them late this week. I haven't gotten the slim floppy yet- but can confirm SD works with the Converter.... since this stuff gets sold off ebay quickly, I am going to get you all some links now: 10 of the 32MB flash for cheap (much cheaper than CF) - the seller has several links to lots of 10 of these..... so look at the sellers store if this one is sold.... ebay Item number: 200190600143 SDHC SD MMC XD MS Pro DUO 2 PCMCIA Card Adapter Adaptor - again look at the sellers store for more of these..... ebay item number: 270202309799 The ACARD SCSI Adapter you will just need to do a search on ebay- off ebay it is $70-85, on ebay typically $30-35 + ship.... Search for: Acard AEC-7720U You will need a Y-splitter for power (hard drive power connector and a floppy connector)- like this item- this seller has eleven available- shipping is high, but item cost is low, it about evens out, especially if you can't make one for yourself..... ebay Item number: 110174378419 So we have- flash memory, PC Card Adapter, power, the SCSI converter. Now the IDE to PC Card Adaptor- the seller had 10 - they are gone.... not sure where to get them now.... I guess it was also called an Addonics Digidrive... at least the model I have..... this one is exactly like it! ebay Item number: 130187954297 If I see any others IDE to PC Card Adaptors that have a drive bay bezel/bracket that aren't $85, I will forward the links...... Great news- I have contacted the ebay seller about the drives. He pulled the remaining items due to a concern that all the drives may not be the same. Some different labeling or something like that. If he can verify the drives are the same, he is going to get back with me, and I will provide some auction numbers..... PS- just curious- did someone from the group buy that drive from the link I sent? Also- how many of you on the group are looking at doing this? Kurt- Mine works- All items I have previously linked to for purchase work, as I have a set, and have done the following: Hooked up the chain of parts. wrote OS HD to the SD memory Booted off the SD memory. Copied sound bank to SD memory. Rebooted from SD and verified sound banks work. The only part I don't have yet is the slim floppy so I can put it all back in the emax case. I may have to fabricate a mounting bracket, but will make a template for the group. As I am doing this I am finding that, while I got a lot of sound banks from previous owner on floppy (and CD of them in zip format - though some are missing.....), many floppies are mislabeled. So I am going to have to go to the CD and make new floppies so the ZD list jives.... to get a complete collection on the flash drive). I haven't used EMXP, but I am about to try that this weekend. If I can skip putting the banks on floppy and go right to the SD, that could save a lot of time. Guess I will find out. Regards, Ted On Jan 12, 2008, at 11:13 AM, kurt anders wrote: > Hi Ted. Hi Ted, I'd give this a go in a flash, but unfortunately I need the SCSI kit for my Emax first! Cheers, Mike. Mike- I hear that- it took me a couple of years before I got mine done. Of course, I was not looking very hard either..... Is Rob from Emu Archive out there???? Did you make any progress getting the PAL binary and the SCSI Eprom binary???? Never heard back from you last time I inquired.... It wasn't explained by me how fast it is, but YES it does load faster than HD. Once the OS is loaded, switching banks is almost instantaneous! Also- for those wondering, I still haven't gotten the Slim Floppy working yet. I know that Sony slim floppy drives don't work. I am trying with a Teac right now...I hope to know if this is feasible by mid next week at the latest. Regards, Ted

and where to get it? Any special things about putting it in? Thanks, Kurt

thanks for narrowing it down to the power supply, guys. googling this problem tells me that this is relatively common on these older machines, so... yeah. i am, however, a bit of a novice in regards to knowing much about the emax... so any leads or tips would be appreciated, for sure! id really love to get the machine working again... i feel weird when i see it sitting there, dead ;) peter Quoting Roland S-50 <rolands50@...>:

I haven't had a PS swap yet, though someone else did a great pinout for putting a pc power supply into the emax, so search the archives. Fortunately for me, I have a spare, and the original hasn't died yet. The first thing I did when I got my emax was pull the power supply out and resoldered every connection on that thing! ONe thing that will cause the PS to fail is cold solders..... regards, Ted

I have had to replace the power supply on my Emax HDSE twice now. Mine just failed completely (of course at a gig), was not intermittant. I'm thinking it may not be the power supply. Maybe you have a weak connection inside. Open it up and look for the obvious. Also make sure the power cable or socket is not the culprit. Also check that the fuse and fuse holder socket is making good connection. If it is shutting down after powering up, it may be a componant heating up too high, then failing. The price on the power supply has doubled (probably availability). I've used EPR electronics. http://www.eprelectronics.com/ You will have to pull the power supply PC board to ship to them (fairly easy to do, just mark your wires or take close up pictures before you start). They will send back a different one that is recondidtioned. The one I got back makes the voltage selector obsolete (so it recognizes any voltage without having to switch the knob). Hope this helps. -Alan ---- In emax@yahoogroups.com, ted Summers <djtbs1@...> wrote: > > I haven't had a PS swap yet, though someone else did a great pinout > for putting a pc power supply into the emax, so search the archives. > Fortunately for me, I have a spare, and the original hasn't died yet.

Yes, definitely open the emax up and look for any obvious signs of loose connections. The screen on my emax was behaving strangely and reseating the connectors to around the analog board and the front panel board seemed to do the trick. Just be carefull poking around the powersupply, from what i understand larger capacitors in the power supply can hang onto a charge for quite a while and remain dangerous. good connection. If it is shutting down after powering up, it may be
a componant heating up too high, then failing. The price on
the power supply has doubled (probably availability). I've used EPR
electronics. http://www.eprelectronics.com/ You will have to pull
the power supply PC board to ship to them (fairly easy to do, just
mark your wires or take close up pictures before you start). They
will send back a different one that is recondidtioned. The one I got
back makes the voltage selector obsolete (so it recognizes any
voltage without having to switch the knob). Hope this helps. -Alan

Hola ALL! SO, it took some doing, but I have figured out how to make a laptop slim floppy drive work in Emax. So to those of you who wish to put in the CF (that fits into a floppy drive bay size slot), and still have a floppy in front- you need to buy a laptop floppy drive. I dunno if brand matters. I got a used Teac FD05HG "used" for about $5, new they are around 50.... I used this seller and bought 2 drives - at $5 plus ship, how do you lose????.... http://stores.ebay.com/DataStar-Computers_Laptop- Parts_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ16QQftidZ2QQtZkm You need to get a itx floppy drive adapter to normal floppy.... I got mine from this seller--- http://stores.ebay.com/Teknagen-Electronics $.0.99 + $4.99 shipping. Now- what to do: I am going to upload an image to the website in the files- slimfdd01.jpg Cut the trace marked with the red x on the adapter that connects the 4th pin in from the right on the itx to pins 12 & 14 of the floppy connector. You will need to zoom in to see it, it is pretty small (400X). I didn't want to mark that you should cut more traces than you should! Connect the itx pin you just disconnected (on the flipside of the adapter the 2nd pin in the row CLOSEST to the circuit board edge (now from the left as we flipped the circuit board over). Connect that pin to the 5th pin from the left in that CLOSEST row with a wire. Voila- it should work! The whole issue with floppies not working is not that the EMAX is that special. It is that it uses the Schugart floppy interface which is a predecessor to the normal IBM floppy interface. So there are a couple of caveats to working with it. I am so happy I finally got this to work :-) Now to make some brackets so I can mount that bad boy and I am done! Regards ALL! Ted [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Just wondering if anyone did what I did with the CF and the Laptop Floppy? Yes I got the Laptop floppy to work, but when I went to put it all together I found it would not fit properly.... and nothing worked. So back to the drawing board... 1) The IDE to SCSI converter connected directly onto the back of the 3.5" IDE CF would not fit due to it getting in the way of keyboard keys. Solution- I get my connector parts from mouser.com - no minimums..... a) get a double ended header (pn 517-665-08-36) and use a standard IDE cable to extend out past the keys. But then the connector pins are reversed, so you need a 40-pin IDC connector (pn#517-89140-0101) and twist each pair of wires so 1 becomes 2 and 2 becomes 1, 3=4, and 4=3... --- on down the line. took me about 40 minutes to do... b) Later I found there is a plug, which would mean no header is needed, and no need to twist the wires (I haven't tested this, but it should work) price is a bit steep $8+, wire twisting . (IDC plug... pn# 517-4640-6000). If you haven't ordered the stuff for #1, I might suggest this route for easier solution. 2) My laptop floppy is not the same width as a standard 3.5" drive so, there would be side to side gaps, used some spacers and made some mounting brackets... but also I didn't have the proper screws to mount that floppy. Yes you could just rethread or strip out the threads on the laptop drive, but I like my stuff to be solid. I found that my TEAC FD05G had 2.6M screws. A little difficult to find here in the US, even at the specialty fastener stores I had access too. You really need 2.6Mx6mm. I found that the 2.6M screws are available from hobby stores as they are used in RC car motors..... Duratrax supplies a kit of screws (cost $4) that had a bunch of lengths. I was able to make 1 set work for the 4 screws I needed. Duratrax part number DTXQ0283 (might be available via the web).... Bracket info- brackets were about the length of the 3.5" drive, about 3.25cm tall. From the mounting screws for the standard drive, measure 2.3cm up from hole centers where the CF drive side mount holes are, and drill your holes for the Slim floppy. 3) The itx adaptor for laptop floppy (mentioned previously in past emails) was going to flap around, so I added a metal extension bracket to the HD bracket and mounted it to that. 4) For some reason, about the time I had this all working, the laptop floppy stopped working for me. I had to retrace my steps as far as the ITX floppy adaptor. What I found in the end....(cut trace previously mentioned in email).....I also cut an additional trace on the ITX which connected to pins 10 & 16 on the 34 pin Floppy side to pin 10 of the 26 pin ITX. So then I jumpered 34pin #10 to 26pin #4, and 34pin #16 to pin 10.... my previous instructions may have worked too, but I did something to make it not work (solder cleanup unsoldered something after last attempt- not sure).... but this works. So it is all put together.... I have some really poor pictures of this and the final result. If people would like, I can upload them to the files..... Now I have a question- when I go to put all these disks on the CF, if I copy a floppy, does that also copy any supermode or sequences that are on the floppy too? Regards, Ted

OK, I'm slowly collecting parts thanks to Ted to make an internal CF drive for may Emax II and then upgrading the front to a slim+CF front. came across a few links that may be helpful to others who are doing this. IDE to CF with faceplate: $16 each if you order 2-4. The site has a minimum $20 order. Haven't gotten one so not absolutely positive it will work but the price looked good :). http://www.acscontrol.com/Index_ACS.asp?Page=/Pages/Products/CompactFlash/IDE_To_CF_Adapter.htm IDE extender with 40 pin male to 40 pin female $4.88 http://www.southernhillscomputer.com/ide40idsmato.html they also have the power y splitter $2.47 http://www.southernhillscomputer.com/5mamotodu3fe.html another option to twisting the wires also, if like me you have a bunch of old IDE cables lying around would be to use 2 cables and 2 double ended headers, the second header and cable would do a second flip of the even and odd pins putting them back to the original. Anyhow when I get everything up and running I'll post what exact parts I ended us using. Thanks again Ted. BTW did I remember right that at one time you had some slim drive kits that available? --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, Ted Summers <djtbs1@...> wrote:
