Hi; I have a brand new Emax SE. Can anyone tell me the price of this
vintage instrument? Thanks a lot.

Are you saying that you have a new Emax for sale? Is
it the keyboard or the rack? With SCSI or not?

Well, almost new, barely used (only 3 or 4 recording sessions). Is
one of the first Emax Keyboard made, bought in '87 and later upgraded
to SE. In perfect condition with all original disks, another ones,
and manuals. Don't know if has SCSI, I suppose not.

a rackmount hd just sold on ebay for over $500. I got my keyboard SE version in a trade for a Kaoss pad last year. So i'd say the price is pretty variable.

Keep in mind that it was an HD that sold for that much
and it had an extensive sample library with it.

An Emax which is SE, but not SE HD is not worth much
more than a regular Emax, because the only thing that
separates them is the silk screen on the front of the
machine since anyone can upgrade an Emax to an Emax SE.

Ebay is not a good indicator of how much stuff is worth. Certain types of
buyers seem to be artificially inflating the worth of stuff in the last few
years. I've never seen an Emax go for $575 before. Then again I've never
seen a DX-100 go for $500 either. It's insane.

RE: [emax] Re: Price

2008-02-20 by Jonathon Stevens

Althought I really like my emax, I would hesitate to invest much money for one. You can do a hell of a lot more feature wise with a new machine, so in my mind the only thing going for the emax is it's somewhat unique sound and simple interface. I can't imagine it's either cheap or easy to fix a 20+ year old sampler, which to me should be a huge factor with regards to price.

For those who have to have "that" sound then there probably is no limit to the price they'll pay to get it. My cheap SE machine came with a 100+ disc library, although i didn't get it for the library, i got it for the sound and interface. Would I pay more than $100? no way. I got a Sequential prophet 2002 for $25, there's 12 bits and analog filters, not as easy to use, not as hip as the emax, but it'll get the job done when you want 12 bit & analog filters.

But hey, it's just my opinion.

And there was a Prophet 2002 that just went for over $500 as well on Ebay a
week or so ago. Ebay isn't a good place to find a deal and most people are
expecting to make a good profit. I see auctions for things like Prophet-5's
with a buy it now at $2,000 or Moog Prodigy's for $1,000.

Re: [emax] Re: Price

2008-02-21 by Alan Currall

So where does one go for a 'bargain' if everyone who is selling knows
that they will get their best price on Ebay? Unfortunately, it's a
market driven economy and these things actually are 'worth' exactly
what people are willing to pay for them. It's just tough for us poor
enthusiasts who are priced out of the market.

My only advice (which I find hard to follow myself) is to be patient.
What goes up, must come down.

That's my 2 cents (probably not enough, I know),

i think some of it has to do with what people feel that "secret" weapon *is*
for a certain sound or production that they are looking for. there's a lot
of hype - if someone finds out that their favorite artist or producer uses a
Casio SK-1 then they *have* to use it too. i also think maybe another part
of it has to do with how low the value of the dollar is compared to the
Euro, that is, if someone is willing to ship overseas. Ebay reaches out to
such a broad market that it's really tough to get a deal. The best bet is
to luck out at someone's garage sale...

I think the best deals to be had are locally. Fortunately where I am located many people use craigslist and i've found a few deals through there. I think the key is to be patient.

I agree with you completely about the "secret weapon" idea. My interest in these ancient devices is that I enjoy the quirks of using them. I like the limited interfaces and have some appreciation for the often compromised sound quality relative to modern machines. There's some part of me that feels that these limitations inspire my own creativity. But obviously ymmv.

I'll 2nd that. I picked up a mint EMAX SE keyboard w/ 100
or so discs for $100 from the Austin Craislist. I've
recently added SCSI to it and couldn't be happier.

Re: Price

2008-02-21 by Tristan Upton

Check around pawn shops too, its amazing the things that turn up. Often the
people working there have no idea what audio/music gear is worth so you can
find some real bargains in amongst the overpriced junk.

You can also pickup bargains via mailing lists like this. On Analog Heaven
there is guy selling an Esi-2000 with 128MB for $80!

All my recent sampler purchases have been for a few hundred dollars on Ebay.
This is certainly the time to buy up samplers at bargain basement prices as
so many people shift across to all computer setups.

Re: [emax] Re: Price

2008-02-22 by Brooks Mosher

i *did* find a decent deal on Ebay about a year ago. i won a bid on Ebay
for the Baldwin (Emax) clone sampling keyboard for $60. the seller thought
the disk drive wasn't working but it turned out fine. to top it off, the
seller was in Ferndale Michigan, about two miles from where i was living so
i didn't have to pay any shipping. i also got about 12 disks of E-mu
samples in the deal too (not that that mattered anyways since i got EMXP and
the omni floppy program). anyways, i ended up selling the keyboard a few
months ago because i just moved from Detroit to Austin. i think i'll have
to keep an eye out on the Austin Craig's list. :)

Re: Price

Where di you find the parts for SCSI?

Also, I've noticed a spike in ebay prices over the last 4-5 weeks. I
think its because its tax refund season, and Bush's 'rebate' that's
doing it. Its a great time to sell, not so great for buying...

Re: [emax] Re: Price

I think I forgot to mention that it was a EMAX SE HD. The
only parts required were a ribbon cable ,an external
connecter and the EMAX OS Plus disc. I made a custom
external zipdrive with an internal scsi Zip and external
case which allows me to set the drive to SCSI ID 0.
