Arpeggiator and Thru/Out confusion

Arpeggiator and Thru/Out confusion

2001-12-10 by sp99z

Im having some confusion/difficulty with the triggering other devices
through the EmaxII and with the arpeggiator.

I have keyboard (as controller) > hooked up to Emax II (rack) > then
hooked up to another MIDI sound module.
Having all three devices set to the same MIDI channel, I can
play/trigger the module from the keyboard like normal when I have the
Emax MIDI set to "Thru" (instead of "Out"), and when set to "Out" I
can use the arpeggiator to trigger the sound module (this is what I
want to do), but I cant play the module at all with the arpeggiator
turned off (and the Emax MIDI still set to "Out") for some reason.

I want to be able to use the arpeggiator to trigger other
modules/things but I need it to be able to still send trigger signals
to them whether the arpeggiator is on or off. Seems like it should
be able to do this.. Im not sure what the problem is, any ideas?

Thanks

This is correct. Think of the Arppegiator as a separate unit. When set to "Thru" the
incoming MIDI data is passed straight through however, when the Arpeggiator is turned
on it receives the incoming MIDI data and then sends processed data "Out" the MIDI
port. The Arppegiator is therefore more like another unit that just happens to be built in
to the Emax.

Unfortunately you can't.

Well, you can't with the Emax alone, but if you get yourself an external
MIDI Merge box you can route the original controller keyboard
information to the synths as well as the arp data from the Emax.

how about making an extra copy of each preset you are
using on the emax, with MIDI set to thru on one, and
arp turned on and MIDI sent to out on the other, then
switch presets to turn the arpeggiator "on' or "off"
????

oooooo good idea !, would that really work and could I switch
presets like that fast/quickly from a midi footcontroller (if running
OS from the floppy and not hard drive)?

thanks

maybe.... though thats another thing in the MIDI chain.

I dont use my emax really in depth (just for sampling occasionally for that
excellent sound it gets with its filters) but does anyone know if you can
set foot switch one and foot switch two to advance patches on the emax ?!??
that could be a viable option.

Otherwise, how about just changing patches from the emax's front pannel ?!??

There is no difference. preset info is all in RAM. you load a bank off a
disk, which contains up to 99 presets. so there should be no disk activity
associated with changing presets.

Plug in a roland type footswitch into one of the pedal sockets on back and then you can
choose the function for that jack with Preset Definition | 7 | 6 "Adv Preset". Note that it is
saved with each preset so you will have to set it up in each preset. I think Footswitch 1
defaults to Sustain and Footswitch 2 defaults to Adv Preset, but I can't be sure.
