Emax 1000 "rescued" from the trash!

Emax 1000 "rescued" from the trash!

2008-06-10 by sergiolo72

Hi all...

I have a Emax 1000 on my lab workbench, I got it from a colleague that
was trowing it into the trash. It's nearly new, just the usual dust
that you can expect on a machine that's been in a cellar for at leas 5
years.

He told me that the Emax was fully functional when he stopped using it.

Now, the Emax does power on (at least it seems...) but it doesn't even
try to boot. It halts almost instantly with all front panel leds on,
nothing on the display (but the display itself it's powered on and
shows the usual "empty" LCD pixel grid, so I can assume it's working)
and no access to floppy disk drive, or so it seems... I see no access
light on the drive, with or without a disk.

Any idea about that? I've asked for the service manual, but the Emax
1000 is a machine that I don't know at all, so maybe someone of you
could have a hint about those symptoms...

Thanks in advance.

Always start-off with the battery. Check the voltage.

BTW I noticed just now that the word should be "basement" and not
"cellar"... Cellar is for wines, not for stuff. In italian there is
just one word ("cantina") for both things :-)

It's not a skill problem ;-) but tracing a problem in a totally
unknown hardware takes a lot of time, and at the moment I don't have
all that time to spend on this synth.
Anyway, this week end I'll open it to check power supply and the CPU
board...

Thank you :-)

Battery? From what I've read, the Emax loads OS and sounds from disk
at every power-on, so there should be no battery. I'm wrong?

Oh well... this weekend I'll open it to have a look.

Thank you.
