Problem with Scanner MPU?

Problem with Scanner MPU?

2008-06-20 by markolaukka

Hello All,

Recently I bought a defected Emax rack.
It loads the disc but after that it hangs, and it won't respond to any
of the frontpanel buttons, i.e. nothing more happens.
Now, I have the tehcnial manual and it says that if the instrument load
the software but nothing more happens it's the scanner CPU/MPU that are
broken and needs to be replaced. As far as the manual say it's an
Rockwell 6500/11 microcontroller. Does anyone knows where I can find
one of these microcontrollers? I've been searching the net all day
without any result.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance

I would get another rack and canibalize it, is faster and cheaper. I just got an Emax II
keyboard and that is what I am planing to do for parts.

When you say it loads the disk and just hangs there. what exactly
happens.

Sequence of evemts- what leds come on on the panel and do they stay
on or change?
What shows in LCD? Does it say diagnostics, then loading software or
only diagnostics. These are all important because there may be other
explanation.

Regards.

Re: [emax] Re: Problem with Scanner MPU?

2008-06-21 by Marko Laukka

Hello Ted,
It turns on normal and ask for 'Insert disk!'. If I load the OS3.2 disk that came with Emax, it loads it and gives error message: 'CRC error', and hangs. If I put one of my own disks (OS1.1 HD) it loads and says: 'wait a moment' loads the disk and display the loaded bank/preset and then hangs, i.e. it doesn't matter which buttons I press, nothing happens. The 'Enter' led lights up as normal but no other leds (except for 'Analog processing'-led at beginning) or any sequences of leds turns on. So I don't get any hint from some diagnostic check at start up.
The technical manual says; Problem: 'Software loads and then display goes blank', Solution: 'Change bad scanner MPU'.
But in my case the display keep showing the loaded sound/preset and the whole front panel is locked/don't respond to any button pushes. The only led that stays on is the 'Enter' led.

Thanks in advance,
Marko

I don't like to do that (not yet anyway) because it's in very good condition otherwise, and I feel it's worth a try to make it work.

Re: SV: [emax] Re: Problem with Scanner MPU?

Hi Marko,

The problem you have here is that the 6500/11 scanner MPU in your Emax
has been mask programmed at the factory. Unless you can find a spare
chip with the correct Emu software in the ROM then you are out of
luck. I expect Emu did a bulk order of these back in the day but they
are now long obsolete. I believe the same chip was used in the EIII,
Emax and Emax II. If identical software was used on the scanner chip
for all these samplers then it is likely that some Emu service agents
may still have spares.

The first thing you should determine though is whether the 6500/11 is
actually the problem. The fault could just be an oxidised chip socket
or something else entirely. Either getting another working Emax or
getting together with someone who has one would be the simplest
solution. Then you can swap the chips between the two machines and see
if that fixes the problem. You would be better off trying your 6500/11
in the working Emax just in case your Emax is doing something that
killed your chip.

If you are not confident with diagnosing and repairing electronic
equipment then it would be better to get a tech to do it for you. And
always observe static safety, for every dead 6500/11 another Emax dies
:(

Re: Problem with Scanner MPU?

Does this problem occur with all of your disks ?
Because sometimes if there's a defective soundbank or OS on the
floppy disk, it can cause the Emax immediately to "crash".
Have you tried with a floppy *only* containing the OS, but no bank ?
As far as I remember you should also use the appropriate OS, e.g. no
OS for HD versions if you don't have a HD Emax...

Of course there's only a small chance that the above is the actual
cause of your problem, but you never know: the above problem would be
much easier to solve than trying to find spare parts...

Thanks for your answer Tristan,
I do have another Emax rack working. So I guess I have to test it with that one.
Hopefully it's something else than the Scanner MPU itself. I'll try what you suggested.

Thanks,
Marko

Hello esynthesist,
Yes I have tried different disks, and it's all the same.
When I use the OS3.2 disk it says 'CRC error' which means (I think) 'Cyclic Redundancy Check'. A way to check that data was received correctly.
But that message does not occur with the other disks, not with HD version anyway.

Ok, so it most probably is a hardware error like you assumed.
I just booted my Emax SE with the SE HD OS and it works perfectly.
Booting it with HD 1.1 OS does not work but then again it also
doesn't load the bank so this is not the same problem as you
encounter.
Good luck.
