Emax II Power supply, anyone know where I can get one?

You're kind of stuck, I'm afraid... There's no drop-in replacement for the
PSU. You could probably hack up a PC power supply to work though. IIRC the
Emax needs +12v, -12v and +5v which are all easy enough to get. I don't
remember seeing voltage markings on the PSU pins, but if they're marked,
that will give you an idea. If not, I'm sure I could measure the voltages
on mine.

Usual disclaimer, don't fry yourself, SMPSU's can be very nasty with the
375vdc smoothing capacitors...

Hi,
E-mu have no more spares, and they aren't so hot on legacy gear these days.
Ask a local E-mu service centre to repair it (yes it can be done - yes tell
'em to get on with it!), or seek out a suitable replacement.

The Emax II PSU supplies ...

Yellow = Plus 5V
Orange= Plus 12V
Purple = Minus 12V
Green = digital ground

You'll have to guess at how many amps, but it pulls 45W in total so these
rails are going to be 1 - 2 amps each. Overspec the replacement supply.

Regards
Rob

Pat, I've taken a little time to look at the power supply inside of an Emax II rack which early on I had power supply problems with. I turned out to be a cold solder joint. There is a number of Items to check if you're electronically inclined. If you disconnect the EmaxII logic board check the Power supply for the proper voltages. If they are present then perhaps there is a short somewhere else in the system beyond the connector. Does the power supply blow fuses immediately? Understand this!If you are at all hesitant you should probably refrain from working on the electronics inside of the equipment. If you should decide to work on the electronic equipment please be advised that just as easy as you stand a chance at repairing the problem you also run the risk of totally destroying your instrument needless to say accidental death!
    With all of that behind us I'll go on. Here is a website which has a power supply which in theory I believe will work for the EmaxII located at Jameco Electronics http://www.jameco.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/Jameco/searchResult.d2w/report?sort=&search=190318 Ok now that you have viewed the link I must say that the supply is rated in current capability higher than that of the original EmaxII power supply. There are 2 Problems I see with the replacement power supply.

Problem 1:The original has 12 pins to connect a number of wires to. You will have to build a connector adapter. This my friend you will have to figure out. The last time I looked at my supply (P4, P9, & P14 were connected to the Plus 5 volts DC), (P2,P7,& P12 were connected to Plus 12 volts DC), (P1,P6, & P11 were connected to minus 12 volts),and (P3,P8, & P13 were connected to DC common). The original Power supply has the following current rating written on the power supply as follows:

Plus 5 volts has current capacity of 5 amps. (+5/5A)
Plus 12 volts has a current capacity of 1.85 amps. (+12/1.85A)
Minus 12 volts has a current capacity of 0.34 amps. (-12/0.34A)

As you can see the replacement power supply has a little more capability which should allow you ample power.

Problem 2: You will have to find a way to mount the PC board as it appears to be slightly different in size. Strictly a mechanical issue. The Old one will have to go since there will be no room for it anymore.

I seriously want to say I have not needed to do this yet. I myself would try this if I had the problem you are having. I hope this may shed some light on the subject to you and others in the group.

Be careful,
Skip

Some how the link was too long for the group board to handle. If the link don't work this time go to the http://www.jameco.com and search for power supply part number 190318

2nd try:
