Is anyone in the group using their Emax II with a Mac?

2008-11-28 by bty54193247

Hello all,

I've just bought a couple of very, very cheap Mac's on Ebay. The first is an SE, which I know
works with an Emulator II, but I was wondering if it would work with either of my Emax II's?
I was going to use Sound Designer II, and I intend to dump all of my banks onto the HD.
The second Mac is an 8500. A mate has been using a 7500, which he used to store his banks.
Would the 8500, when the right software has been installed talk to my Emax II's ?
Many thanks in advance.

All the best

Dave

Hey, welcome to the group. I just joined myself. I picked up a Emax II and Emulator II recently as well and was thinking of getting a Mac as well. I am going to try the Laptop route, don't have allot of room. Let me know how you make out.

Thanks
G

Hello G,

I've just purchased another machine that was used with an Emulator II.....it has all of the
sound banks, and software already installed.
It's a Mac SE. The only issue with it is.....the SCSI chip might be fried, (but it might be the
port, rather than the chip).
Having said that, the machine will still communicate with an Emulator II via RS232.

All the best

Dave

Re: Is anyone in the group using their Emax II with a Mac?

Hi

I'm not sure about any of these machines, but note that Sound
Designer II requires a DSP card (like AudioMedia II) installed in the
Mac.
SDII works fine with the Emax-II here on a Centris 650 with
audiomedia card. The same is true for Alchemy 3 but it can't
communicate with the Emax-II on my Powerbook 180C. It's just the
other way around for my Emulator II: SoundDesigner for EII on the
Powerbook works fine, but on the Centris 650 it doesn't.

Alchemy doesn't require any DSP card to be installed in the Mac.

Another important remark: none of these software packages is able to
load/unload banks to/from the Emax-II. Only the samples can be
transferred, and Alchemy does a better job than SDII because it can
transfer all samples with one mouse-click.
The only software which was able to load/unload full banks was Sound
Designer for Emax, but even this one is not capable of doing this on
the Emax-II: the Mac will freeze with an Emax-II, but it works fine
with an Emax-I.

Many thanks indeed E-Synthesist.

Having read your advice.....would you say that Alchemy would be the best option for me?
It looks like the simplest solution.
Many thanks again.

Probably, and perhaps it's the only option for you :-)
But keep in mind that you will not be able to use the Mac as
backup/HD for Emax-II banks via RS422. For soundwave editing and
transferring WAV files Alchemy is OK.

Would I be able to back-up on my Mac via SCSI? I'm not to worried if I cant, as I now have
several SCSI storage options, ie: EZ135, SCSI HD, which I would connect directly to my
sampler.
Many thanks again for all of your help.

All the best

Dave

the reason for having rs422 is if you have not got a scsi enabled or
upgradable main board thats why e-synthesist is making a program for
the people who only have emu rev 1 boards in there emax.

if you have a pc try sample wrench xe great dumping program for old
samplers and it works in xp

sadly no, although the Emax II has SCSI it never supported SMDI(?) which was
the protocol for transfer over SCSI. You can only use MIDI or the RS-422
cable.

Many thanks Phil....ah well, nevermind!!
Looks like I'm going to be using MIDI!!
