Problems with ZIP drive in Emax HD SE

Problems with ZIP drive in Emax HD SE

2009-07-05 by bermudaben2006

Hi all,

I have been trying to use an internal 100 MB Zip drive with my Emax HD SE for for quite some time now, but I still don't succeed. As I am getting increasingly frustrated, I would be very grateful if someone could assist me.

This is what I have done so far:
- removed internal HD
- replaced internal floppy drive with slim floppy drive using a floppy drive converter from Ted Summers
- fitted 100 MB SCSI ZIP drive into Emax

Both drives are now sitting where the original floppy drive was. The slim floppy is working fine. But if I try to format the Zip disk I get an error message: "hard disk error".

I double-checked all connections. The cables are all connected correctly. SCSI ID of the Zip drive is set to 0 (all jumpers removed), termination is on, as there are no more drives connected to the SCSI cable. If I run "scan hd" or "scsi/echip" in the hd diagnostics mode, Emax freezes and I need to power off.

What can I do? I bought the Zip drive from a trustworthy person, so I don't think it's broken. Its green light flashes up when I power on the Emax. On the other hand, I think that something could be wrong with the SCSI connection. When I bought this Emax the hard disk was not working. Since this is not unusual I thought that the hd was simply broken and everything would be fine as soon as I connect the Zip drive.

I really appreciate your help.
Ben

I think, and I'm not certain at all, that the primary drive in the emax has to be on ID 1 and that 0 is not used because of the floppy.

That is incorrect. The floppy controller is a different data bus than
the SCSI bus.
There is one IC that controls the SCSI and a totally different IC that
controls the floppy.
Floppy ID is Disk Select 0
SCSI ID 0-6 are available.
When set to SCSI ID 0, a SCSI drive (properly formatted with OS
installed), boots the Emax.

Regards.
