I've had the exact same trouble with my setup. Here is an excerpt from an email message I got from Ted..
"First thing to note here is that the Emax could only use very specific CD ROM drives that were 1x or 2x, if I recall.
It may not be able to see the drive itself, so the CD format may not even be the issue- the CD for Emax is a proprietary format. My PC or Mac cannot read an Emax 1/2 formatted CD that is known to be in Emax compatible format."
If you look at the Silveria website:
http://www.silveriafamily.com/emax/emax2_repair.html
There are only a handful of drives listed as known compatible:
These drives are known to be compabitle.

Toshiba XM-5201TA (quad speed)

TEXEL DM-5024 (FCC ID EQNDM5024) - available factory installed in an external case.

SONY CDU-541-41 (single speed). Roland once sold this unit as the "Roland CD-5"
So you see there are not alot of drives that can be trusted. I for example bought a Toshiba XM-3401BME thinking it would be close enough, as it has a caddy for the CD, and the 3401-B works as well as the 3101BME, but alas it does not nor is it even recognized by the Emax (which is bad, as I have other devices that can be seen on a forced format or HDD diagnosis, but give hardware errors)
The other thing to consider is the 1x/2x speed, which is another discussion by itself, but you could solve this aspect by finding a piece of software that allows burning this slow even though it may not be necessary if it is simply a drive issue.
One member on this list has had success with the Apple 300e PLUS, which is a closed case external. Again, a guess is that 300e stands for external, and 300i is internal, but there is the 'PLUS' that you have to worry about.

The nice thing is that if you are intent on getting the CD thing right, there is actually a 300e PLUS for sale on Ebay, although you will pay a premium for it. It is ITEM # 390122599109.
I have given up on my CD project and moved on to just ZIPS and CF drives which have newer technology and would be able to transfer the data at higher speeds than 1x or 2x anyway.
I am selling all of my amassed SCSI cases, etc. as I've gotten nothing to work and I really wouldn't want to carry around a second box and another cable when I play out...
Your call...
