Freeing Sample Memory and Other Stuff. :)

Freeing Sample Memory and Other Stuff. :)

2000-05-22 by Michael

Hi,
I'm new to the list. My name is Michael, and I just got an EmaxII
last week! After successfully installing a 540meg internal drive,
I've decided to risk getting the 8meg ram board and stereo chips from
a guy who is selling his EmaxII Turbo for parts.. Anyone have any
suggestions for me? I figure if I've got the two boards side by side
for comparison, I can figure out how to install it myself..
Also, can someone direct me on how I would delete a sample from
memory, thusly freeing up RAM? I'm trying to take a drum sample from
one the drum banks I got with the keyboard, change the pitch down 24
half steps, change the sample rate to 10000hz, and then change the
pitch back up 24 half steps (this gives the drum sound a nice grungy
crunch).. But I'm always out of memory and I can't seem to figure
out how to erase _samples_ from memory (although I figured out how
to erase presets).

Thanks,
  Michael

Make sure you get a Memory Install Disk from E-mu. The Emax must
be reprogrammed to accept new memory.

As you know this makes me very uneasy. I'm not sure you'll be able to
tell which chips have been replaced. What exactly is wrong with the
one being sold as parts?

Use Erase Voice is Preset Management (??) On the Emax II a "Voice"
actually means "sample" The Emax does not store "samples" as
standalone objections like newer samplers do. Any Digital Effects you
perform on the "sample" will effect in all Presets it appears in.

Roger that. Speaking of the memory install disk, I don't suppose
anyone on the list has a disk they could copy and send me? I'll pay for it..
That'll save me the trouble of dealing with Emu (they're a bit slow
responding to email).. :)
The problem with the board being sold as parts is the disk drive..
Something (the owner can't figure out what) is wrong with it, he constantly
gets "disk errors".. I might even be able to replace his disk drive with
mine and just use his emax.. ?
The Erase Voice command didn't work.. It doesn't clear out the sample
from memory. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? What does work for me is
loading an individual preset instead of an entire bank. That way it only
loads the samples needed for that one preset and that saves some space..

Hi and welcome.
I think you are better od\f trying to fix the drive. I have an Emax SE rack
that had a flakey drive in it. I replaced the drive and it works great. Of
course the actual mileage may vary.

Ditto on just replacing the drive...
As far as the memory disks, I'm not sure if they are formatted in a way
that can be copied easily if at all.
When I had a music store install my memory (and I tried to run the
disks)the disks alone did not do the job. Apparently the store or I did
not do something right (?). I had to call the support line where they
walked me through some procedure to make it work (I doubt I documented
it).

My suggestion would be to never try to contact E-mu via email, it's a
hopeless task. There have been a lot of people on the E-MUsaic list
fume about how they feel they are being ignored because E-mu never
responds to their emails.

The disk unfortunately is not something you can just copy. Someone
would have to make a copy of it prior to actually using it because once
it's been used the install program scrambles itself and it requires E-mu
to generate a decryption code in order for the disk to be used again.
It's very lame, but E-mu are overly protective of all their intellectual
property.

This is almost always do to a bad drive. My bet would be it would be
easier to figure out the drive problem than to try to upgrade a mono to
stereo and memory to boot.

Without access to my Emax II I can't verify anything. you might need
to erase voice then save the new bank and reload.
