I was wondering how is it using a Zip drive with a sampler / Emax(II) (anyone using one?) especially wondering about: does it have to be spinning all the time , or only when accessing and does it make noise when on but not spinning? --== Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ ==-- Share what you know. The only thing I can say is that I know the Zip Classic (not the newer
ones) work with some Emax II's and not at all with others. It can't be a
drive that powers down, but it should only make noise when actually
accessing something.

I got a zip about 2 months ago, and it works great with my Emax II. And it powers down. I knew it would load samples way quicker than from floppies, but what I didn't expect was that it loads at least 3 times faster than the approx. 50 meg seagate hard drive that I have in it. Now I boot from the Zip exclusively. No problems at all so far. PF

In here the same is happening....just not without problems...after 2 years of perfect work, now my zip reads perfectly but when trying to format a zip disk...it makes some clicks and renders the zips useless...in one weekend I have blown 4 zips....arrrrghhh!!!! not the fault of the emax because it only blew 2 zips the other 2 were on a Mac and on a Roland VS...its defnitly a drive fault...and to "discover" this I blew 50% of the drive value in disks :(( Best, Paulo Abreu ------------------- peabreu@...

Your ZIP drive sounds like it has the "Click of Death", it's quite common for ZIP drives to get, don't put any more disks in the drive, just replace your ZIP drive. Search the internet for Click of Death info, there is a great Windows diagnostic program at www.grc.com that can detect the Click of Death in ZIP drives before it ever starts destroying your disks. It's important for everyone to be familiar with this Iomega hardware problem. David Beckman http://members.xoom.com/ESIsamples/

Isn't that known as the "click of death" a common issue with the Zip?

Is the Emax much quieter without the hard drive (and when the zip drive is not spinning) ?? -- On Sun, 12 Mar 2000 20:40:37 vornfklorb wrote: >From: vornfklorb@... > >I got a zip about 2 months ago, and it works great with my Emax II. Thanks everybody...yes it seems I had the "click of death" with my zip drive...so ...zip/iomega no more... > Is the Emax much quieter without the hard drive > (and when the zip drive is not spinning) ?? Depends on the hard drive but generaly you can not get more silent then with only a zip attached to the emax...simply no noise except when reading or writing. I was reading a little bit more on the Click of Death at www.grc.com and it appears that Iomega will replace Click of Death machines, even if they are past the warranty period. Hope this helps. David Beckman http://members.xoom.com/ESIsamples/

Hi David Arrrghh... I get it...thanks anyway :( >Your ZIP drive sounds like it has the "Click of Death", it's quite common >for ZIP drives to get, don't put any more disks in the drive, just replace > your ZIP drive. Yes John it seems that it is.... > Isn't that known as the "click of death" a common issue with the Zip? Thanks all PS: I know that emax is an "old" sampler technology but this list could have much more traffic...especialy that the more I get to know new samplers the more I love my Emax2 and Emax ;) Best, Paulo Abreu ---------------- peabreu@...
