this is not a hardware problem. You get this behaviour because the 8
outs are direct voice outputs for the 8 hardware voice channels in the
emax. They are not "Aux outs" like you get on more modern fully digital
samplers.
From memory, the emax manual explains all of this pretty fully, as well
as explaining how to limit a sample to a subset of voice channels if you
want.
Really, voice channel assignment is only particularly useful for
splitting outs for something like a drumkit which is a collection of
monophonic instruments. there's no way to dynamically share polyphony
over a few sounds and have all notes from each sound come out of a
single output.... So if you group a couple of voice channels to do
chords, for example, then you need each of those voice channels going to
a mixer input still.
