Can I do this from my XP using a USB Card reader?
2010-01-06 by esynthesist
As far as I remember from my tests it should be possible for Emax-I (not for Emax-II). For Emax-I the only thing you have to do is: - put the (pre-formatted out-of-the-box) SD card in your USB card writer and check in Windows Explorer which drive letter has been assigned to your SD card. - open EMXP and create a blank "HD/CD image" for Emax-I (menu 1.5.2) - save the correct Emax operating system to that image (again with EMXP, use menu 1.4.3, I guess you should use the Emax Plus OS, downloadable here or from emulatorarchive) - "restore" this image to your SD card with EMXP (menu 1.5.1.3) Normally this card should work as a bootable hard disk for your Emax. I didn't test it again to confirm 100% though. ///E-Synthesist --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "PaulD" <pauldays1@...> wrote:

I tried a USB card reader for the EMAX II and it will not work writing from EMXP, it has to be a built in one, or a PC card one. It has something to do with the SCSI connection I think. I bought one of the SCSI CF/SD card writers from TED Summers and mounted it in my EMAX II and it works great. There is a SD pc card adapter you have to buy, but it cost like 6 dollars off ebay. I put the SD card adapter in my XP laptop, use EMXP to write to the SD card, then I take the adaptor out with the SD card still in it and put it in the pc card slot on the card reader mounted in the EMAX II, you can boot from it also. Works like a charm. I think you can only use up to 512mb size SD cards, but with that much space, you can load the O/S and tons of banks on one card. Hope this helps. Thx for the info =) Still dont understand why a USB card reader adn EMXP works with Emax and not Emax II? Whats the difference?? My trouble is that all my computers are MAC. That means no SCSI solutions, no solutions for floppy... and so on. My only hope is to be able to either get hands of a working SCSI CD Rom or use a SCSI CF card reader with a USB CF Card reader connected to my MAC using EMXP. (Im running WIN7 on my MACS) So basically a USB CF card reader = Not working with EMXP to make EMAX II Images? --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, nung242 <nung242@...> wrote:

On my windows vista laptop, EMXP can read and write SD cards with both the internal card reade *and* with a USB card reader. And it works for both the Emax and the Emax-II (the type of sampler shouldn't matter anyway, problems with card readers on EMXP/Windows are a windows/driver issue not related to what EMXP does with the card...) The only difference between using EMXP and SD cards for Emax and Emax-II is that for Emax-II the cards must have been specifically *physically* formatted for use in an Emax-II. However, formatting removable harddisks (like SD cards) for use in Emax-II is NOT supported by EMXP, because I simply didn't succeed yet in finding out why my formatting routines don't work for the Emax-II :-) So if you have an Emax-II, you must first format the SD card in the Emax-II itself before you can write and read the card with EMXP. But if you have an Emax, you don't have to format the SD card specifically for the Emax - the preformatting of the card (done for Windows/Mac) should be OK. So you can immediately start reading and writing the cards with EMXP. //E-Synthesist --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "drifter7508" <drifter7508@...> wrote:

The SCSI card reader I got has the slot for CF, SD, PC CARD and MMC. The PC CARD slot with the PC CARD SD adapter is the only one that works for me on my EMAX II. I tried the SD slot, but it will not see the card and seems to only see the slot with the PC CARD adapter in it. I have not had a chance to try a separate CF card. To format you will need to have a floppy with the EMAX II OS on it in the floppy drive, then choose format and get to the point where you choose the media to format, then choose drive select - SCSI 1 - which is the ID you should have the SCSI drive set to. Ted Summers has exact info on the PC CARD adapter to buy, I am at work and dont have access to it, but I got it off ebay for like 6 dollars. Good luck! Holy Cow...it work fine for my EMAX II. I was having trouble that the EMAX wouldn't format a CF card, nor SD/Adapter Card, but I did this selecting the EMAX II image and OS and it worked perfectly, thank you, finally I can use all the sound banks here and not my dinky floppies. One more questions....How can I get the emax to boot from this too? Thank you all for the help, and bringing back the Emax to life. --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, nung242 <nung242@...> wrote:

You need to set the SCSI boot ID to the ID of your reader. It will still check the floppy first, so make sure there's no disk in there and it should boot from CF. --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, "PaulD" <pauldays1@...> wrote:
