DIsplay issue

DIsplay issue

2010-09-25 by kolakube

Hi,

FIrst ever post on a Yahoo group so sorry if this has been answered.

Just bought an Emax 2 and am literally hooked. .
So, now that I have found love in my life of course I want to do everything I can to restore.

First thing that needs doing is the screen. I can read the writing on it but the blue background seems faded. Its actually easier to see with the light on. Any remedies?

Id like to uprate the RAM too. I have done a little research into this and understand this is awkward to do. I have 4 meg in mine so have the necessary daughter board.
Is there anywhere I can get another 4 meg to max it out?

Also how easy are spares to come by? I worry in the coming decade these these may not be maintainable.

Mickey

you just give them the dimentions of your efoil and they will make 1 that fits or you can send your old 1 and they can template it

Ah right. Thanks Jamie

How easy are they to fit/take out/replace whatever?

Re: [emax] Re: DIsplay issue

let us know what size they tell you the emax lcd is. I want to order one
too. (pink)

Are these the same as the Telesis units? They said they have white foils
and you can put a pink filter over it for an extra $5. Or is the
backlightforyou product more refined built and more intergrated? (I mean
the gel for the colors).

Re: [emax] Re: DIsplay issue

gel for colour

i wont use telesis units as they sent me 1 and it was back to front they had
the anode and cathode the wrong way round so when i put in the lcd it shon
backwards very anoying as i turned it around and the foil did not light at
all

i contacted them as it was a customer repair and he told me that the foil
was correct i told him it was wrong but got no joy from him i ended up
forking out extra cash to get 1

from the link i gave which was perfect as they have silver backing and will
only light 1 way

when you make your own efoils you buy an efiol sheet which is a big square
200x200mm and with a number of cathodes and anodes arround the outside of
the big efoil

you then cut the sheet to make the size you require

there are diferent polarities of anode and cathode so that they can be
connected from either right or left

when they make the efoils for various synths they cut an efoil and test the
polarity of the efoil with the synth using jumper wires this way they can
tell if the + or minus connections are reversed on the lcd terminals

so that you can make sure that it shines the right way

What size did you order Jammy. Saves me taking mine to bits.

Are they easy to install?

desolder 2 connections remove old 1 by sliding it out

the new 1 comes over sized a little you have to trim it to fit then just slide it into place and resolder

i have the old 1 some where ill have a look

What size did you order Jammy. Saves me taking mine to bits.

  Are they easy to install?

Re: DIsplay issue

What synth was it where you saw the polarity issue? Every 80s/90s EL system I've seen uses AC to drive the panel, hence the inverters (the things that whine a bit when the display is old). Even if the polarity was backwards on an OEL or LED backlight, it would just not shine, it wouldn't send light out of the non-iridescent backing. :)

I've had pretty good luck with Telesis in the past, although the latest EL panel I got -- for a larger (T1/M1/TG77/etc) panel -- had a slight diagonal line when illuminated, and needed minor trimming to fit.

Another option that may exist for these is to retrofit an entire modern LCD panel, as is popular with the Wavestation, M1/T1, TG77, and others. That way you get the benefit of an LED backlight (which will virtually never burn out), better contrast/color options, and for a 16x2 or whatever the emax II uses, it's probably cheaper than a $30 backlight. But I can't confirm it would work without a schematic, and you'd have to dig around for 5v to send to the display if it currently uses AC, which I believe it does.

Glad you're enjoying the new synth, have fun! :)

Indeed, and so does the Emax. The whine is because of the oscillator that generates the AC (typically close to 100V) for the EL foil. The small transformer that's in the inverter will vibrate in that frequency, causing the sound. There generally isn't a rectifier after the inverter (and I doubt EL foil would even work on DC).

By the way, whine and display age are not necessarily related. Mine was pretty silent with a dead backlight and has started whining significantly more since it got a new backlight...

Re: [emax] Re: DIsplay issue

problem with fitting a led lcd is that its 7mm larger in depth

and sits away from the the stand offs and you have to do 1 of 2 things 1 is to cut a hole in the panel for the lcd to sit through then add a piece of protective glass on top or you have to extend all the buttons and potentiometers

and it did not send light out off the back it shone through the right side but only when connected with the light side facing towards the back of the synth

im a synth repair tech and have been fixing synths for 20 years

and have made my own el foil panels so i know what im talking about

Hello,

Here's my solution to the same problem. Ikea to the rescue:

Re: [emax] Re: DIsplay issue

unsolder with desolder gun or desolder wick

litely pull the elfoil from pins then slide out from lcd

use old efoil as template for trimming new 1

once trimed slide the efoil back into lcd lining up holes on pins

then place pin hole down over pins and resolder

job done

if its a akai or fz1 then its attached to a cable so its a means of sliding out old efoil and disconnecting cable from old efoil and reconnecting new efoil

this is an easier job as it can all be done away from the sampler or synth

  Ah right. Thanks Jamie

How easy are they to fit/take out/replace whatever?

I ordered a foil. Piece of crap. I need a real LCD. Maybe something from
Crystal Fonts if I can find the right one that is compatible.
