EMXP and Emax CD-ROMs - question

EMXP and Emax CD-ROMs - question

2011-05-17 by Steve

Hi,

I'm considering purchasing some Emax libraries on CD-ROMs and am just trying to confirm - as I currently have no access to Emax CD-ROMs or a SCSI CD drive - whether EMXP will allow me to read banks from the CD-ROM, store them on the PC (under /images) and then write the bank images out to a zip disk.

All I can see at present is that EMXP would allow me to take a backup of a CD, but not necessarily allow me to transfer the libraries from C-ROM to zip disk.

Anyone able to confirm one way or the other?

Regards,

Steve

Hi Steve:

Yes, EMXP can read CD-Roms formatted for the Emulator III and the Emax
II. You can use EMXP to create a disk image of any CD-Rom, and then
extract individual banks from those images.

I have my entire sample collection for the EIII, Emax and Emax II
stored as individual banks, all via EMXP. It takes some time because
EMXP makes you extract banks one-by-one, but it's worth it.

Best,
DBM

In addition you can also extract the individual banks directly from the CD-Rom, so without having to make a disk image of the CD-Rom first ;-)

Correct; of course you can select all banks at once (by selecting 'A' in the bank overview) and then keep the enter key pressed to speed up the loop which asks for the target file name per bank - as long as no file exists already with the suggested names, this "trick" works fine to extract all banks in a very short period of time.
Maybe in a next version I will add a true batch option.

Thanks for the clarification, E-Synthesist.

I, for one, would love to see a batch option in a future EMXP update. That would be incredibly useful!

I might also suggest a different source for the default bank name when EMXP is extracting banks. At the present, I believe EMXP looks at some sort of bank or preset data to determine the default bank name? The problem is, the internal bank naming information isn't always helpful or accurate. I've seen banks - even banks from factory sources - with some really weird/misleading names in EMXP...

Re: EMXP and Emax CD-ROMs - question

2011-05-19 by ditabeardmemo

Hi Andres:

I'm not selling the CDs from my library. I was just explaining to the OP that banks can be extracted from the CDs using EMXP quite easily.

The Emulator III banks probably could work in an Emax II if you converted them to .EB2 format in EMXP. That said, you would probably want a machine with a corresponding amount of RAM (both my EIII and Emax II are fully expanded at 8MB.) Even so, I've discovered inconsistencies when banks are converted between two formats. For example, inexplicable difference in volume levels, panning, etc.

Best,
DBM

You can do this in bulk in Translator www.chickensys.com; this is
Windows or Mac.

You can format a ZipDisk or an image to Emax format, and move the
Banks over by multi-selecting them. It's an easy way of making compilations.

It's also only one step - from disk to disk. No need for an
intermediate file on the computer.

There's no need to change Bank names or anything like that.
Translator can also rename Banks or even Presets, just like you would
in on a computer hard drive.

>>> At the present, I believe EMXP looks at some sort of bank or
preset data to determine the default bank name

Actually EMXP is simply taking the bank name from each bank - this is stored with each bank and is the name as can be seen on the EIII/Emax display when browsing a cdrom or hard disk. So if they are weird, they are probably weird on the EIII/Emax themselves too.
Sometimes EMXP is adapting the native bank name if this name contains exotic characters (it replaces those by underscores).

What other source do you suggest ? Because imho there's not a lot of other starting points that would make more sense than...well... the bank name :-)

>>> Even so, I've discovered inconsistencies when banks are converted between two formats. For example, inexplicable difference in volume levels, panning, etc.

This could be caused by differences between the samplers (e.g. no AUX envelope on Emax-II), but of course it could also be caused by "wrong" values used for some internal translation parameters in the translation engine of EMXP. If you detect sound differences of which you are pretty sure that "the translaton job can probably be done better", feel free to send me the source bank. Perhaps I can enhance the translation engine a little bit (although it's not always that easy to find a good compromise between e.g. the different envelope curves and filters used by the different samplers...)
