Emax & Akai MPC 3000

Emax & Akai MPC 3000

2002-10-07 by jg

Hi, (new to list)...
I just picked up a used original Emax this weekend.

I got to playing with it today & can't seem to get it
to work with my Akai MPC3000.
It works fine with my other MIDI Keyboard, but no go
on the MPC.
I guess (as mentioned in the manual) the Emax was
intended for keyboards, but is there any way to
trigger sounds in it with a Drum machine such as the
MPC?

I'd really like to get it working with my MPC as this
thing has a great analog sound, even more so than my S950.

if you can get the mpc to work with your S950, then you should easily be
able to get the mpc to work with your emax. Make sure you setup the MIDI
channels right. Read the emax manual, and double check everything..

I actually did end up getting it to work.

What I am stumped on now is trying to get the Note
Variation Slider of my MPC 3000 to control the Fc
(Frequency Cut-Off) on my sample in the Emax Rack
Sampler.

I studied the manual.
It says to assign it to the "Right Wheel".
I go into Realtime Controls, select 2 (for "Fc") then
assign it to Control Source #2 which is assigned to
the "Right Wheel" & is set up as MIDI Controller # 1.

I assign my MPC Slider to Controller # 1.
No go.

Anyone else here tried anything like this?

hmm.. well I never tried that, but it seems very possible. How about you try
to just play the emax over MIDI from another keyboard controller, and see if
the mod wheel on the controller will affect fc. If so then you know the emax
is setup right, and you need to look at the mpc3000. I don't have an
mpc3000, so I can't really help there.....

good luck,

I don't know if the EMAX has this function, but the EMAXII has the MIDI
Analyzer. This will show any MIDI data comming into the EMAX. You will be
able to see if the controller data is getting to the EMAX in the first place
and then if the controller is the same one that you want the EMAX to use to
control the Fc. On the EMAXII the MIDI analyzer is under the MASTER#9,
SPECIAL#5 menu.

Hope this helps
Steve

I know this might be the obvious, but did you make sure that the bank your tring to
control the FC on is actually going to be effected by changing the Fc? I have lots of
banks that because of how the filters are set-up or the samples themselves changing
the Fc has little to no effect. I've never assigned the FC to the right wheel personaly, I
tend to assign it to Velocity.

Actually after some more research I learned I cannot
do this.
The MPC's Note Slider is assignable to an external
controller to receive data only, not send.
So can't do it I guess.
However the Velocity thing would probably work since
my MPC can send velocity info.

I guess I would have change the setting from Right
Pitch Wheel to CHP (chp) inside the Emax.
