Emax Model Numbers for SCSI External Retrofit

Emax Model Numbers for SCSI External Retrofit

2011-09-07 by John

There is an emax on ebay with model #1000 on the back. Can this be retrofitted to house an internal zip drive?

Please help me out fellow emaxer's before I buy.

Thanks!

My understanding is---
No one can easily answer that.
The serial numbers don't correspond to board rev #s.
That a version 1 board which can't be upgraded to SCSI is a fairly rare...
If the unit ever went into the factory or was serviced by an EMU authorized
repair facility, there is also a good chance that the rev1 logic would have
been swapped out with a later board rev.

You would have to ask the owner if it:
1) Has SCSI / HD.
2) if no SCSI, what is the board revision.
Example board rev information is here:
http://djtbs1.wordpress.com/2010/10/04/scsi-kit-images/

With that said- for Emax 1's there are spare boards available (Jammie in UK
has some) that can be upgraded as well.

Let me know if you get it and find out you need a SCSI update chipset.

Regards,
Ted

model number 10000 means nothing get hip to open the synth up and tell you what revison mother board it is if its 1 then no chance if its revision 2 then yes with teds kit

if revision 3 then it has scsi on the motherboard

and if its a se hd plus it will have an external db25 scsi socket

I requested the Board Rev number from the owner through ebay message. I don't know if he will open it or not to find out. I hope I didn't blow my chance of winning the bid by posting it here LOL!.

It looks nice and comes with a case. I wish I never sold my Emax SE HD keyboard back in 2001. The hard drive worked and it was AWESOME. So much easier to sample with than my ESI 32. Which, if I get this Emax and it works out I will be selling with the working SCSI drive (external) full of sounds after some creative re-sampling of course.

Wish me luck!

Thank you for the assistance!

Verified via the photos and asking that there is no external midi connector. Thank you I will see if he will open it up and take a look. Thank you!

Sorry, I didn't ask for the link to try and out bid you, I have 2 Emax racks...

I just wanted to see if there was any info in the auction, as Ted said the serial #s won't tell you a lot.
I don't know how rare the Rev A non-SCSI upgradeable Emax Is are. They might be very rare, Ted knows his stuff. Both of the Emax racks I bought, however, were Rev A boards.
I had to buy a separate board to upgrade.

Sorry Didn't mean to imply you wanted to outbid me. Paranoid about getting one back I suppose. I seem to covet them now that I don't have one and the Alan Wilder auction (big fan of his work) came up.
It's great to know it's possible to get a replacement board if I need one.

There is a youtube video of an emax with an IOMEGA blue bezzelled (sp?) zip drive mounted to access from the back of the Emax keyboard and he still has the floppy installed. I wonder how he got both to work in the same machine. I would think that would be a power supply challenge. It's way cool. I ultimately want an emax with an internal zip that I can do the rare gig with that has all my custom sound banks in it since I do LOTS of sound design work and sampling for my music. I also have a mac se30 and the connector cable so I would really love to get that working again. I never got it to work with an Emax II 2mb board I had a couple years ago got tired of it and sold.

Well wish me luck and thanks so much for all the information!

Go for compact flash and slim floppy.
well worth the investment IMO.
