SD Emax

SD Emax

2012-01-02 by Francis Cote

Hi guys,

I've managed to make a clean install of 7.5.5 on my Quadra 700. I can use
Alchemy fine with my Emax 2.
I tried the SDEmax which runs on an image on Zip drive. I did as written, I
used the exe program and created the image on Zip 100.

The Zip is recognized fine. When try starting sound designer, it crashes
bad.
The screen says :

Sorry, a system error occured.
"Sound Designer Emax 1.13"
CHK error.

Means anything to one of you?

Thanks

Francis

I believe Sound Designer EMAX only works on the original EMAX not EMAX II

Also you don't have to use a Zip Drive to run this software.

If you load the SDEMAX.hfs file into Basilisk II (Macintosh Emulator) You can make a data
image of the HFS with Disk Copy 6.22 in .IMG format and you can copy the .IMG to your Macintosh and mount it.

If it is only for the Emax 1, I won't try to make it work. It doesn't
explain why it crashes like that.

Anyways, thanks for answering.

Re: SD Emax

There is a few things that make Sound Designer Emax crash,

1. Too much RAM, no more than 19mb system ram.
2. 68040's caches, You need to disable cache with the (Cache Switch Control Panel) (it comes with System 7.5.2) or earlier. You can copy this control panel and put it in newer versions of Mac OS that support 68040.
3. Virtual Memory, disable that. (Memory Control Panel)
4. Modern Memory Manager disable that too, (Memory Control Panel) (PPC Only).I think

Re: SD Emax

Most functions of SD for Emax work fine on the Emax-II.
That includes real time control of all functions of the Emax-II which were also available on Emax-I.
And it also includes sample transfer (12-bit only though) and bank transfer (but only upload to Emax-II, not download, that's a limitation of the Emax-II OS.
However, samples larger than 512K can not be transferred properly. In that case SD for Emax will only transfer a small portion of the sample, i.e. the size of the sample minus K*512K :-)

Re: [emax] Re: SD Emax

2012-01-03 by Francis Cote

My Quadra has 64mb of Ram. I guess I'll stick to Alchemy. The cache could
give problems.

It's mainly for editing the samples. The rest, like parameters, I prefer to
use the Emax itself. Then, EMXP does the job for backups.

So I won't bother.

Thanks a lot!

Re: SD Emax

I don't know why the Emax verison of Sound Designer is so picky especially when you compare it to Sound Designer Universal which runs on almost all configs without fail.

I wish someone would hack Sound Designer Emax and make it run a bit better without
all these constraints.
