Just bought Emax & server space

2002-11-22 by Jarremix

Hi there I tried to post before but dont think it went through.
Well I have just got an Emax for my home studio I have never worked
with it before and have only used the M1.
I would like to know how to get some sound banks and files for it as
I am finding very little on line.

If someone would like to share the files they can use my 750 meg
server to host the files on . I would appreciate any help as i am
just getting some time to work with it now. I am a looking for good
sounds like depeche mode used. I have only 3 disks so far , Piano,
Arco strings and Slap bass.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Fergal

Your first post came straight to me as the moderator, not to the group. I tried to reply,
but your email address was rejected.

For help see my page on EMX within my Emax II FAQ. The most common issues
are:

1. You absolutely must use DS/DD floppy disks.
2. It is highly recommended that you be using DOS 6.2 or earlier not
Windows

I for one have never and will never offer my library through EMX. It's far
too time consuming and unreliable a method. I myself haven't use EMX in 3
years since I never did get reliable results with it once I got my Windows
98 machine. For me bank trading on Syquest cartridges has proved to be the
best way.

Hi John

You mentioned " Syquest cartridges" What are these
and where can you purchase them?

Is there any way of dumping sounds via the SCSI port
from computer to EMAX?

I just bought an old EMAX-SE-HD, it seems the HD is
failing and DS/DD disks are not all that common any
more. Any suggestions on referbishing?

Many thanks

Hi,
The Emax SE HD will run a ZIP100. Get an internal ZIP100 SCSI drive second
hand. It will replace the internal hard drive, which is way too noisy, just
move power and SCSI cabling from the old drive to the ZIP. Copy your 3.5"
diskettes onto ZIP carts, then mount the ZIP drive in the floppy cut out
(you may need to file the cut out just a bit to get the ZIP to fit - but the
mountings are in the right place.

The Emax will boot from the ZIP if you set it to SCSI ID 0.

The Emax will not work with Syquets, ZIP250 - only a few hard disks
(miniscribe 8425S).

As told by other members the Syquest cartridges I refered to would not work with an
Emax SE HD. I must have been under the impression you were using an Emax II.
Syquest was the largest removable media drive company before Iomega ran them out of
business with the cheaper (in more than just cost) Zip drives. They made among other
things the removable media drives E-mu sold as accessories to their samplers. All of my
library are on Syquest Ez-135 and EZ-Flyer 230 drives. Hence why that is my preferred
way of trading.

Now now, John.
there was a reason iomega ran syquest out of business.
Take an original syquest cartrige, lift it up say about 50cm off the table
and then drop it onto the table. Whats the chance that your cart is still at
all usable? I believe the carts were rated for about a 20cm drop. Very
unsuitable for portable mass data storage and transfer.

And if you had a problem with something breaking, even if you had looked
after you carts and not droped them - but something else had failed, Syquest
were arrogant and basically completely unsympathetic.

After zips came out, syquest responded with the ez135 drive, that was
basically trying to copy zip, but by that time most of their user base,
frustrated with them for years had found a usable alternative, and had
already deserted them.

julian

(who has had a zip drive get click of death and destroy data, but still uses
them, though with regular backups to the PC nowdays)

I'm certainly not one to defend companies. My comments are based on my experience
and I do feel that Syquest drives were faster, more reliable, had better compatability and
typically larger storage amounts. In the end though what really bothers me is that Emax
II users are all using different storage media which makes it hard to trade banks and
since all syquest drives are compatible with all Emax II's I do tend to suggest them over
a Zip.
