Emax I repair - need your help

2013-03-10 by freddy1771994

Hi,

I found a cheap Emax I HD/SE Keyboard and bought it. The seller said that actually just the floppy drive is faulty.
Obviously there're also other problems.

Do you know why there is just one black bar in the display?

Thank you for your help!
Best regards!

Hi,

the lights never stop to light. After having reseated all the chips the problem is still the same.

Another aspect worth to be mentioned is that the HD is working every 5 seconds, as if it is loading something but it never works and restarts every 5 seconds.

The upper display line is still dark.

Do you guys have an idea?

Thank you!!

have you tried unhooking the HD and booting from floppy?

It's a long shot, but maybe the SCSI controller on the Hard disk has gone
bad and is hanging the bus.

Just a thought.

Hi,
thanks, it didn't help. The floppy drive is dead and the display is still black and the LEDs are still on all the time...

hmmm... What might cause its behaviour?....

Thanks for your help!!!

Where the floppy drive is dead too- I don't know what the result would be
on the display.
You sure the floppy cable isn't hooked up backwards or offset by a pin?

Otherwise, my suggestion is to send to Jammie in UK, or send to me if in US.

Don't have any other ideas.

Maybe the problem is simple that's why I took two photo of the unit upside down

Otherwise I will have to send it to jammie if he thinks he knows what to do.

Thank you for all your ideas and for your help!!

Your floppy is hooked up backwards. The STRIPE always goes to the back of
the UNIT. Stripe denotes PIN 1 of the connection and PIN 1 is towards the
back of the unit.
Same is true for SCSI cable.

Ok thank you, but it still doesnt work.

Now only the preset definition and the analog proceccing LEDs shine. The display is still black in the top row :/

Besides the HD has stopped to work endlessly. Nevertheless no buttons react.

Thanks fpr your help.

Hi,

It's important to know that Emax will tell you what's wrong through it's leds. What I can tell about the leds (picture of the blank LED's which is normal because there is no boot) is that there is a faulty connection to the E-Chip register(Sequencer LED) and faulty to write a byte into it's E-Chip RAM (Master LED).

This indicates that it has something todo with the E-Chip. On the Emax II all testing and function data is regulated through LSI#2 chip. The same is done through the E-Chip of the Emax I.

Do make sure to disconnect every cable before you start to work on the Emax.

I don't own an Emax I but Emax II so you'll have to look if the E-chip is removable and clean contacts with pure alcohol if possible. Than make sure everything is dried up and reseat the E-chip. Hopefully it will boot, otherwise it might be a faulty E-chip or bad solder joints to the E-chip (reheat with heater).

Kind regards,
Frank

Hi,

Preset Definition LED:

Wrote command to 1772 Floppy Disk Controller to restore head on
the drive, but the drive never reached track 0, or the 1772 never
responded.

Analog Processing LED:
Unable to load software from disk.

Kind regards,
Frank

Two lights at the bottom of the row indicate BAD FLOPPY DRIVE / DRIVE
disconnected / misconnected.
If you have a floppy drive that cannot be set DS0, this will also show the
2 lights....
Since you had it hooked backwards, it is also possible you blew out the
floppy drive control circuit on the Emax.

But that doesn't explain the display itself.
It is also possible that your display has gone bad...

My experience is that a bad connection to EPROM or the display connector
itself can result in this behavior of the display.

Basically- it is my opinion that you have multiple issues, not just one
issue resulting in the behavior.

If you have another working emax (1 or 2), you could try the display on it
without causing any harm.
If display works elsewheres, then now you are back to logic board having
the issue.
Same could be said of floppy drive- try it elsewheres if possible.

Hi thanks for your long and fantastic answer. I will check it all tomorrow because it is already late here.

Yes the light continously lights...
