I've wondered the same but there are a couple things I think about. There are not too many software synths I've seen that are multi- timbral in the traditional sense. I think it's because you can run multiple instances of the plugin and that is considered the software world's way of saying something is multi-timbral. I can see this being valid if the plugin is using the same amount of resource whether its running 4 instances or using 4 parts within 1 instance. The main difference being each user's computer would determine the limitations of how many instances (or how "multi-timbral" it can be) per machine.
