In group 1, set 'select range' to 0-63. In group 2, set 'select range' to 64-127. This is the kind of setup you'd usually use for velocity switching. With the mod-matrix you can however use any midi signal for 'layer switching', not just velocity. So, save the instrument, and return to the main EXS interface. In the modulation matrix, you'll probably have the 1st slot set to "dest = sample select", and "source = velocity". Now just change the source to e.g controller 1 (modulation wheel). Dial in some x-fading (right above the 1st mod-matrix slot). Pick "save settings to instrument" (or whatever the precise wording is) from the options menu. Done.
