A better alternative along the same lines would be: create a channel splitter and cable it into max. 16 EXS instances. Assign the channel splitter to the midi track. Now open a Matrix window, with a floating event list. In the Matrix select the notes you want to assign to e.g. the 3rd EXS, and in Event change their channel to 3.
