It is not write protected. The preferences are not correctly set and
this can happen for any of a number of reasons. 

It is not necessary to go into terminal (sheesh... file that
recommendation in "over-the-top advice for the pocket protector set").
Simply navigate to the file with the finder, click it once, then type
Command-I. You get a little dialog box where you can set permissions
to "read and write okay." Do this, close the little box, you're set.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
