The preferences are not correctly set and this can happen for any of a number of reasons. It is not necessary to go into terminal (sheesh... file that recommendation in "over-the-top advice for the pocket protector set"). Simply navigate to the file with the finder, click it once, then type Command-I. You get a little dialog box where you can set permissions to "read and write okay."
