Apparently not. I found this old post from Pete
Thomas:

I've now got them both, side to side.

The 290 has a more brittle top with less undamped
sustain ringing. The
middle is warmer but less focussed.

The low end of the 290 is also warmer, not that the
Emperor low end is
brighter overall, the Emperor has more low and more
high. It still has
a lovely bass sound but seems to have more brightness
in with it at
the same time if I'm making myself clear.
