Hi,
the problem is simply that you have too many instrument files.
The Exs24 instrument menu in Logic Windows 5.5 has a limitation in that 
it won't open if you have more than (roughly) 10000 instruments.
As you say, you can use the control window, but it's messy...

Suggestion: keep around only the useful instrument files.
