I agree: You should repeating whole notes for the length of the phrase or section. This way even less-than-perfect loops will sit in the pocket! You can also do some rhythmic tricks by using other divisions like half, quarter, etc. Also there is a method within Logic to find the exact length of loops relative to bpm. This and other tricks with loops in Logic can be found in the Studio Sense section of Keyboard, Oct. 2001.
