This has worked since I started using the Mac since at least MacOS7.0 I do a
lot of things Apple doesn't recommend. That's what I love about Macs.
Regardless of the bureaucracy, the thing does exactly what I want it to do.
Macs are pretty powerful in the hands of customization. They are really
flexible. You just have to know how to exploit them. Doesn't come with a
start menu? Why, I'll just make my own, that works better than any other...
(Incidentally, it's the same corporate dumbness that excluded the apple menu
in OSX. A backlash from the Mac community ushered a quick reintroduction of
the feature. Duh!). The only reason the practice you mention may not be
recommended (that I can think of) is that, if you place a removable drive in
the apple menu and the drive is later unattached, the alias gets confused.
Permanently attached HDs never have a problem. An added benefit to putting
your HD in the apple menu is that you also get to bore down through your
desktop folder which is located on the root directory of the disk but is
otherwise invisible. My desktop stays pretty full, and this is the only way
you can quickly drill down to sub-items on the desktop. -Jer
