Well - maybe they are. I bet that in the long run, the amount ot plugin
formats, at least on Macs, will be reduced. Maybe there will only be AU left
in the end. For OSX it certainly seems to be a way better standard than VST
and anything else as it works closer to an OS level.
For Windows it seems that VST is remaining the standard, DXi doesn't seem to
be too popular and IMO it's only a matter of time that Sonar starts
supporting VST directly as well.

From a developers point of view that should actually be good news - from
what I heard converting an existing VST plugin (no matter if it's Mac <OSX
or Windows) to AU seems to be no more problem than porting it to VST/OSX.

And in the end plugins under OSX finally would work just fine regardless of
the host being used - not exactly what's happening right now.

Seriously, if all this turns out well (and if Apple finally delivers
reasonably priced and reasonably fast machines) OSX certainly looks
promising. I for one am almost sure that one day next year I'll be running a
Mac and Logic. Of course I'll keep the PC as a VST host and for everything
else.

Sascha
