VSL on Dual G4 533 w / 1GB of RAM

VSL on Dual G4 533 w / 1GB of RAM

2003-09-15 by Hans Hafner

Hi there,

I'm looking into buying the VSL but would like to know if there are
people on this list having experiences with it with the setup I have:

Dual G4 533Mhz
1 GB RAM
Logic 6.2.1

Or should I save the money for now and wait until I will get a G5 next year?

To not make it a yes and no question: Are there people who can
describe in short the kind of orchestrations they used and how many
instances, with or without freezing (read the thread about the
freezing problems), sample management etc.

I've been to a store the other day and the clerk told me to get a
dedicated PC to run the VSL (of course they sell that too :-)

Cheers
Hans

Right off, you'll want to max that out to 1.5 GB. It only costs $50 or so.

You should be able to do quite a lot on a single machine like that,
but I'm much happier with the dual gig I have now than the dual 450
(roughly comparable to your machine) I used to have.

Based on the fact that my dual gig is able to run between 1-1/2 and
2x as much as the 450, my guess is that you should be able to run a
couple of articulations of each instrument. Polyphony shouldn't be a
problem if you're orchestrating properly.

They're right. I have a GigaStudio machine in addition to the dual
gig Mac, and I plan on adding at least one more in the near future.
