This is answered in FAQ 20.2.

Multiple EXS-24 at once?

2003-09-15 by Phil Nad

Hi there!

I'm looking for some way to play on multiple
EXS-24 MKII audio instruments at once.
I'm trying to create a "performance" made of several
EXS, each one using a different patch so I get many
different sound sources at once, IN REALTIME.

I did found a way to "spread" my MIDI signal across
multiple instruments at once, but the REALTIME
playback is sloppy. PLAYBACK is tight though.

Appart from the soundcard buffering setting set to
very low values, is there something I could do about
it? Is it some kind of software limitation?

I currently use the latest Logic Plat PC / P-4 2.4GHz
and plenty of ATA-133 harddrives, each one dedicated
to only one job. I also use the RME hammerfall 3 i/o
adat lightpipe version (can't remember the model).

Any cue will be very appreciated!

Thanks,

Phil, MOntreal

This is a known problem with Logic - you can't simply play a whole
bunch of VSTi's in realtime.
But...............there's a great workaround that appeared on
Logic-users. Here it is:

MACINTOSH
1) Create a MIDI Instrument in the Environment, and cable it to all the
Audio Instruments you want to play simultaneously.

2) Insert the I/O Plugin on each Audio Instrument _EXCEPT_ the first Audio
Instrument. Set an Input and Output on each I/O Plugin, then bypass the
plugin.

3) Select the MIDI Instrument in the Arrange, and hit Play or Record and
play your multiple softsynths in realtime!

WINDOWS
1) The same instructions as above, except for #2 above you need to place the
I/O Plugin on ALL Audio Instruments, including the first one.

This procedure also allow you to change AI tracks while playing without any
audio glitches or cutouts. If you want to get deeper into the environment,
you can create splits, layers, etc. with transformers and channel splitters.

There are a couple of catches:
* Logic must be in Play or Record for this to work. If you're looking for
non-stop performance, just running Logic in a short cycle will do the trick.
* Keeping synths "live" like this has a heavier CPU load than simply normal
playback, so be forewarned.

Sorry for the OT post...

Is the VSL site down?
I know there are other folks here who also go to the VSL forum
regularly. Can't get in since Tuesday.

Is the VSL site down?

Apparently it is. The page says "Systemstöring", a technical problem.

You don't set an i/o on the instrument, but on the *I/O plug-in*.
I.e. insert the I/O plug-in (under the Helper submenu in the plug-in
insert menu) and open the plug-in. All will be clear then (I hope)...
