samplecell to EXS bulk conversion

samplecell to EXS bulk conversion

2004-02-22 by J

OK, I have about 5,000 samplecell instruments spread accross about 25
folders on my hard drive. there's about 30,000 audio files that go
with them. The original source of these was AKAI format sample CDs
which were extracted using BitHeadz Osmosis software. The original
CDs were all gottenrid of years ago.

I would like to bulk convert all of the samplecell instruments to
EXS24 instruments so that I can use the Redmatica ExsManager software
to help organize them better. As far as I know, it only works with
EXS instruments, and not samplecell ones.

I tried using CDXtract to convert them, but you have to double click
on every instrument individually to load them into the bulk convert
window and I don't want to have to click 10,000 times to convert my
5000 instruments, not counting having to switch from folder to folder.

SO, is there any software which I can point at my hard drive and it
will automatically iterate through all my fodlers, searching for and
converting/renaming all the samplecell instruments into EXS ones???

Thanks for the advice.

Check out Rubber Chicken Translator.
www.chickensys.com
It's supposed to do what you describe. You can get a version that
translates any format to any format or a cheaper version that
translates Sample Cell to EXS.
Good Luck,
Jack

Translator can do this by simply clicking on a disk. CDX does this too,
check the manual for more information.

EXS-24 native does not bulk this, if that what you were thinking.

CDX doesn't do this though - I understand (and share) the original poster's
issue. You can't access the bulk "save" buttons by just clicking on (say) a
top level directory and have CDX recurse down the directory. In order for
the "save" button to appear you have to select a directory which actually
contains some programs to convert and you can't select multiple directories
in any sensible fashion.

If anyone knows how to get round this in CDX, it would be a great help.

Steve.

Easy, select any folder, then click on the "File" button to get the popup
menu,
then select "batch convert folder"

Thanks for the response Bernard, and I'm sure I'm going to feel like an
idiot when you explain, but when I select a top level directory I can see no
"File" button. I have the main window open, the "Akai S5k/6k" source button
active and a single high-level directory selected.

I have The "Files" drop down contains only the options "display long/short
names", and the "File" menu bar option contains only the "Exit" option.

I'm clearly missing something...

Steve.

Thanks Bernard - I was using 4.1.3. I've just downloaded 4.1.5 and the menu
option is present and correct. Really good news - I'm off to try it now.

Steve.

Steve

This feature is available in the version 4.1.5, you are probably using an
older version. Download the latest version and you will have this new
menu item in the "File" popup menu.

[EXS] Post Grandioso Bosendorfer 290 Virtual Instrument

2004-03-03 by James Ryan

Has anybody tried or bought the Post Musical Instruments Grandioso
Bosendorfer 290 Virtual Instrument (uses a Kontakt type interface)? If so,
do you like it? Is it a resourse or memory hog? Does it sit well in an
orchestral piece, rock piece, etc? Any problems.

Does anybody have another high end piano library that they prefer?

Thanks for any replies.

James

I don't have the virtual version, but do have the sample set converted for
EXS. It's a fantastic sounding piano, but is definitely intended for the
concert hall. It comes in wet and dry versions, but the dry version still
contains a noticeable amount of (very nice sounding) ambience. It could be
used in a pop or jazz setting, but you'd be stuck with its built-in natural
reverberation, and it's not a bright, cutting sound that could compete well
in a heavy mix.

The huge Vintaudio C7 seems much better suited to pop and rock use, and
comes in EXS format. I just ordered it but haven't gotten it yet for
torture testing. Another great rock piano is the Worra White Grand, which
uses 32 layers! I tried the demo version, and was constantly maxing out
the EXS's 64 voices. It also doesn't have an EXS 24 version. I had some
discussion with the developer about creating a "lite" version for EXS, but
I've spent so much time doing conversions lately I couldn't deal with
another! Both sites have several demos.

Thanks Sean,
The White Grand is awesome. I emailed them to see if an EXS version is in
the works and if it is possible to roll back some of those layers so it can
actually be used with other instruments in something slightly smaller than a
NASA supercomputer. I listened to the C7 and I like it, but I think the
White has the edge.

I may try the Bosendorfer virtual for the concert piano sounds and later, if
EXS version becomes available, get the White for everything else.

Thanks for the tips!
