Velocity woes

2004-04-11 by Rob Yale

Hi folks,

I've been a long-time Kontakt user, and have recently begun using EXS.
This move was for a couple of reasons; I like the tight integration
between Logic and EXS, and because I just purchased the Vienna
Symphonic Library for EXS.

I've been trying to get my bearings with EXS, and I'm hoping someone
can advise me in a matter that has been frustrating me somewhat. I'm
using QS8.1 as my master keyboard, and between it and EXS the velocity
sensitivity is quite radical. What is the best way to tweak the
velocity response between the master keyboard, Logic and EXS?

Thanks in advance,

There are three places that you can adjust the response during live
performance.

The first is obviously the velocity sensitivity in you master keyboard.

The velocity curve can also be adjusted in the EXS24 preferences.

The velocity response can also be adjusted on the front panel of the EXS24 -
setting the upper and lower limit sliders on the Level via Velocity control on
the right hand side of the EXS24 GUI.

Murray

You can use a transformer (in the Environment) to scale all incoming
velocities up or down. If you need to tweak it more finely, use
filters and scale individual zones. You can also set up switches to
select multiple settings. But doesn't the Quadrasynth let you do
that? It should.

Also, MIDISolutions has little boxes that can do that. If you just
want a set-and-forget box, they're very cheap.

If you have nothing selected in the arrange window you can set the
parameters for MIDI thru and if you just set Velocity to -20 or so
you should be good. This setting will also be applied to recorded
MIDI, meaning, you will have the original velocity, but the sequence
paramter will be -20 and so played back like that.

Cheers
Hans

Thanks! And one other thing: should virtual memory be on or off on EXS
prefs? Is this emagic's term for streaming?

Thanks,

Rob

Yes
