Sudden broken virtual memory

2004-05-12 by knee

Everything's going along fine and has been for weeks, suddenly the
audio stutters as it starts to play an EXS24 sequence, Logic crashes
with no warning. Can't seem to find what's causing it anything until....

Finally I pin it down to Virtual Memory. When it's on, and I play a
SINGLE note from my MIDI keyboard, the sample plays for about one
second then stops, and the "Could not get data in time" performance
figure increments. This is playing ONE SINGLE NOTE from the keyboard
with Logic stopped, whereas before it had been playing many voices
simultaneously. Same thing happens no matter what instrument/sample I
load.

Switching off virtual memory fixes it, but what happened? Why was it OK
one minute and not the next? I've benchmarked my harddrive and it's
above average for the computer I'm running (G4 1gig). Also done the
usual repair permissions etc. The drive can't have suddenly become
super-fragmented.

OS10.3.3
Logic Pro 6.4.1

I just realized the same thing was causing problems for me. I just upgraded to

I can confirm this happened to me some time ago with Logic Pro. Exact
same symptons: would play one note for about half a second, drive was
not fragmented, repaired permissions etc. If I remember correctly I
trashed every Logic preference I could find, and maybe even
re-installed Logic too. Hasn't happened since then.
