Hollowsun, was: The Best EXS Drum Sample CD?

Hollowsun, was: The Best EXS Drum Sample CD?

I've just been reading this post and I say: Wow - now that's what I call a
kickass site! Tons of nicely sampled synths, drum machines and other
goodies. Thanks a ton, Mark!

To answer the question about how to convert them into EXS format:

- Use CDxtract or Chickensys Translator, those will read and convert the AKP
programs.

- For those of us who don't own any of the two (like me), most of the
samples are named properly and you can easily do a "load multiple
audiofiles" from the zone menu, then select "auto map". Most of the samples
have proper looppoints as well, just that the EXS is still lame enough to
allways put the right loop point one sample too early (which becomes
apparent on short loops or pretty much transposed samples), so you may have
to correct this manually.
Of course, in that case you will have to adjust all the ADSR and filter
settings by yourself, but from what I seem to remember, the mentioned
converters don't adapt them too great anyways.

I may eventually compile a bunch of these samples into EXS patches during
the next days, will keep you folks informed.

Regards,
Sascha

I'd sure appreciate having these converted into EXS instruments.

Heck I'd even put the EXS files up on the web, providing we'd get
permission from Hollow Sun.

Perhaps someone with Translator could do them for us?

I'm allready done with the basic keymapping for around 15 instruments or so,
will continue later on.

I will post the ones I did later on, or maybe even put them into the file
area. I mailed Steve from Hollowsun and it's all OK it seems. Of course you
would still need the samples from the Hollowsun site (as re-hosting IMO
would be unfair), but the EXS patches per se are very small.

That might indeed be of some help, I just wonder how well it would convert
the intended AKAI settings - from what it says on the site, some AKAI
internal tweakings are used on quite some of them.

Hi Sascha,

Please don't thank me, thank the guys who maintain that site! My last visit
to Hollow Sun before last week was October of last year, and I was shocked
to see that the content had more than doubled! My personal favorite aspect
of the site is the detailed information on each of the synths and drum
machines. It makes me feel more like I'm playing an instrument than a set of
samples.

Hmmm, well that explains a lot.... Thanks for that tidbit Sascha.

I had a read about their policies, and it seems to me that it would be
perfectly acceptible to create and share EXS instruments of these samples,
as long as they're aware of it:

"Hollow Sun also agrees in principle to the sounds available here to be made
available on other 'free' websites that may provide the sounds in a
different format (e.g. HALion, Reason, etc.). As long as the sounds are not
being used for commercial gain or profit, permission will normally be
granted in return for full credit and a link to this website but please
contact Hollow Sun before proceeding."

I'll contact them, and obtain permission to share the EXS instruments
because I have (or will have, in the case of the new content mentioned
above) already done the work, well CDXtract did the work for me.... I won't
have time to correct any of the .EXS files, but at least we'll all have a
starting point.

Mark

I did a number of them, works fast and well.
