[EXS] Instrument's won't load - Library overload ?

[EXS] Instrument's won't load - Library overload ?

2005-03-21 by Phil Nad

Hi all,

I'm experiencing a weird situation with the EXS24MKII:
About half of my Sampler Instruments won't load
anymore, unless
I reduce the population in the "sampler Instruments"
folder.

Here's my detailled description:

My Sampler Instrument's collection contains about 40
sampler CDs converted in EXS format, plus the complete
VSL Pro library. The EXSManager reports a total of 39
565 instruments.

All my sample data is stored on a dedicated drive
while all the intruments are located under "Logic
6/Sampler Instruments". I've used the Exsmanager to
relink everything so samples are loading fast when
calling any instrument.

It's only been lately that I discovered that when
browsing for instruments in the EXS24, from some point
in the list and untill the end of it, no instrument
would load at all. It's like having a complete
listing of my Instruments (grouped by CD names), but
only the first half of the list is usable (read
loadable). Trying to load something in the second half
simply does nothing. The EXS keeps the last loaded
instrument. You may note that I only have one instance
of the EXS24
in the song.

I then tried to move away a big chunk of instruments
out of the Sampler Instruments folder (here, all my
VSL PRO patches were moved to a temp folder, out of
logic's boot-up scan range). I did that just to see by
curiosity if some "library-size barrier" limit was
reached...
When I rebooted Logic, the EXS24 would now load easily
any patches
that were non-loadable at first! That makes me
believe all my Instruments are okay, but could be the
list to heavy?

Could it be possible that some limit exists ? I guess
some of you guys have more Instruments than me... is
that a known problem?
It is quite annoying to move around Instruments
depending on the need to load them in one song or
another.

Please note that this problem occurs on the 2
computers we have with
the same patch collection mirrored on each station.
(logic 6.4.2/ 6.4.3 / 7 in OSX 10.3.5 / 10.3.8 on 2
dual 1.8 G5s
4 GB Ram on each, Permissions repaired and disks
verified)

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Ah - over the 32,767 "limit". Try shuttling some out and refresh the menu.

32,768 is 2 to 16th power, a "watershed" point, a 16-bit integer.

Look for a calliope sample.

I remember using this sound on a record in NYC in the seventies. After
much discussion and research we eventually synthesised it using an
early Moog synth + a phase shifter + harmonizer, and did it all
pre-midi and analogue.
There are prolly some samples around nowadays, but you need to emulate
the pan and doppler effect to make it sound really authentic.

Project Manager

2005-03-22 by Gordon Ross

I have a lot of songs that project manager highlights sample
instruments and samples as red even though they play back fine in the
song. Surely if they're playing back in the song then the EXS has them
and project manager should be able to find them. Any ideas?

Then you need to scan your folders so Project Manager finds the files
and links them accordingly. Project Manager doesnt build its database
entirely on its own.

Should have said that I did another scan and then did an extended scan
but this still doesn't fix the problem unfortunately,

My understanding is that if the sample instruments are not properly
linked, Logic will still load them and search for the relevant
samples at the time, every time. This is why they play back fine.

Once the instrument files are correctly linked, they will load faster.

I see from your 2nd post that you did scan, but you need to do more
now. Select a red incomplete instrument, then go to the local
<Functions> menu and choose <Find unresolved file references for
selected items>.
This will re-link the samples correctly to the instrument.
Repeat this for all unresolved files.

You must then <Save Project Manager data> from the <Functions> menu.

One further suggestion: if you have a lot of sampler instruments, you
should really consider getting EXSManager from Redmatica. It works
like Project Manager, but about 200 times faster (seriously!).

Hope this helps

I wonder if this is still true with Logic 7.0.1.

Yes,
it's still *that* faster....

I use the Project Manager that came with Logic 7.0.1 on a dual G5/2.5.
I have tons of sampler instruments and never ever have problems with
any of them loading. Maybe a new computer is really what you need.
