2005-05-04 by Micke Nilsson

Hello, I LOVE my Old Lady(haha) but I have a major prob with her. When I
play and record into Logic some notes all of a sudden get cut off and stop
dead...it's driving me crazy!!! anybody know of a simple fix? any and all
suggestions GREATLY appreciated...I'm trying to finish a project...Best,
Micke Nilsson

Hi Micke,

I'm afraid I do not know a solution for this, but I can confirm the
problem. After finishing a project I only installed Old Lady this week.
I have exactly the same problems with randomly cut off sounds.
Could it be lack of memory? Though I have the feeling it should be
enough. I have 2 Gig on my G4 (2X1G).

You've probably already tried this..... In the EXS window make sure
that the number of voices is set to handle the number you're feeding
through it. I think the default setting is 16. for a piano part
you'll need a lot more than that. don't forget that if the pedal is
down they polyphony just keeps adding up. You may be experiencing
something like track stealing.

I don't know about Micke's set up, but my EXS is set to 64 voices and
I do
have the same problems.

Anyone else on this?

I don't remember if you gave your setup....could it be a ram issue.

If you need a work around....try bouncing the track.

If you like the sound of the piano....use it....just do an off-line
bounce when you finish editing your track. I don't know what other
instruments you're running at the same time as the piano, but I have
2gb of ram, I'm running on a powerbook 1.5 GHz and run into this
problem all the time... I just work around it. I suppose if you're
trying to do it live....you're out of luck...

Hey....have you tried using you're dual G4 as a node? ....running Logic
from you're powerbook. This basically adds the processing power of
you're desktop to that of you're power book. Logic 7 does this. Maybe
it will help.

Unfortunately EXS is not supported by nodes.

Btw, the machine is very important for the Old Lady. On a G4
Powerbook I could hardly play a couple of chords without frightening
her. Now on the G5 iMac with 2GB RAM I play what I can (isn't too
much :) and the Lady is amused as long as I do not hold the pedal
down for a couple of bars.

For some pieces one of the smaller instruments like the pedal down or
pedal up settings might be a choice for recording. They can be
replaced by a bigger one later.

Yikes....it's true....I just read it in the manual. I was planning on
using nodes to enable me to run VSL. I figured that I could off load
the fat VSL tracks to the node. How are people doing this? Maybe I
shouldn't buy VSL for EXS....Can you run Kontact as a plug-in and node
enable that? I'd love some input.....

Thanks,
julie

At present, no 3rd party plug ins can be used node enabled.

Hi Julie,

I think that most power users needing to do this usually set up a
separate PC with Gigastudio. They run it from there and trigger the
sounds via midi. And then route the audio back into the Mac for mixing
via the litepipe connection of their audio interface.

You could buy it as Kontakt and then MIDI to it, using the extra computer as a
sound module.

I want everybody here to know that Michiel Post has been working with me
this afternoon to try and solve this problem. He obviously cares about us
users and is doing his utmost to figure out what the trouble is. Best, Micke

That's great! Michiel always comes through sooner or
later. Please fill us in on the results of your
brainstorming. JP

kinda late in my reply. has anyone had success in using wormhole ??? I just got a new PC and would like to use it's muscle with my powerbook. Wormhole is so cheap that i fear it !!!
If it works, what a bargain

WormHole does curently not work in Logic 7.1 under Tiger. If you run
earlier versions you can use it. I haven't tried crossplatform. I
guess you have seen the demo version on the webpage, so you can give
it a shot.

I used WormHole sucessfully to record on a G3 with a good audiocard
directly to Logic on a Powerbook over Ethernet. Not very comfortable
(you have to deal with latency) but it definitely works.
