[OT] G5 hardware problems

[OT] G5 hardware problems

2005-10-03 by czarek@comcast.net

... sorry for bother you guys here but have some problem (generally using G4 and G5dual2Ghz) and in February this year bought G5 1.6

have never had any problems with Macs but G5 1.6 "Manager Special" purchase turned out to be the return item unit which Comp USA sold previously in November 2003 (previous buyer registered it with Apple in Nov 2003 so now there is no Apple waranty on it)
Unit is defective and crashing on me - Comp USA service guys say "Tests run great - unit works great".... but it crashes sometimes 20 times a day (frozen mouse and screen + hammering sound) (I'm playing games with Comp USA from June 18 :)))

Yesterday I've run Norton Utilities on it and it tells me that there are serious problems on Hard Drive ...

and here is my question ... does anybody know and could advise what is the best Hardware Testing / Problem Solving software for Mac on the market ... ???

If I were you I would buy a new harddrive and reload the OS and all
applications and see how it works. Harddrives are cheaper these days and it is
definitely worth a shot. If it doesn't fix the issue its not like the harddrive
is a waste of money because you can never have enough space.

Hello.

It seems like most problems with macs are the memory.
I suggest checking your memory and replacing only with mac certified
chips.

I have had the same problems with my iMac G5 until I replaced chips.

You might want to go back to the beginning and re-image the drive,
ie, a complete reformat and restore of the factory software. Then
install logic only and see if she''s stable.

Hi Michael... thanks for responding

...I did it a couple times before.... first runs great and after a while (3-5 days) goes back to the same thing.... (what's interesting is that once when I've restored the system back to Jaguar unit was running perfect so I was actually about to stay this way ... but Logic 7 needs Panther so....again)
but also when unit was set with Jaguar I have noticed that it freezes up a PC on the network where I was copying my Sounds Libraries from.... (after unpluging a network cable PC was back to normal)
I'm suspecting a network cable or the router input now.... so I've changed both ...can't complain since then.... runs ok ... (5 hours)

anyways ... would like to have some good diagnostic tools in any case

so again does anybody know and could advise
what is the best System diagnostic / Problem Solving software for the
Mac on the market ... ???

HI Guy

at Comp USA service desk they said actually that I have a problem with memory chips 2x128 (and the 1Gb I've added is ok) ... I'm waiting for new 2x128 chips but while running only on my 1Gb still have an issues .... (after changing network cable .. router input ... system was running great around 6 hrs) and suddenly while opening matrix to manually edit events lenght problem came back and was getting frozen around 8 times ... after that crashes easy flow for about an hour so far...

thanks for ideas ...

... with the harddrive that's true ... never enough space ...
Norton Utilities shows up problems on mine (Mac we are talking about) ... didn't fix it yet ...
I'll give a shot (trully I would prefere them to replace it ... For the storage reasons I'm running Samba server for my home network on Fedora 4 linux)

thx

There's one of your problems. NUM is not compatible with Tiger at all
and is for all intend and purposes a dead product. Use DiskWarrior if
you have to...
I presume you have rebuilt your permissions?!

Their website says it is, but everyone in the Mac support business
has been staying away from NUM for quite some time.

It's pretty rare for me to use anything but the built-in tools now a
days.

REX Shared Library/EXS Problem

2005-12-23 by General Zubon

Problem:

I created a file in ReCycle to load into Logic via the EXS 24II using the
Recycle Convert -> Extract MIDI Region And Make New Instrument function
within the EXS' Edit page. I get this strange message when I try to load
this REX2 file:

"The REX2 file was created by a later version of ReCycle and connot be
loaded with this version of the REX shared library. Please update the REX
shared library, then try again."

What is odd is that I worked in this same set-up yesterday. I also created a
few REX2 files in ReCycle and they all loaded just fine using the same
process. I am not doing anything differently at all and I have not updated
or changed any of the software. I only use this computer for Logic + music
... It's not even on the internet.

Also, yesterday's REX2 files will drag into an Audio track/channel in the
arrange window and play just fine ... The one I created today will not. (I
created a second version of the same sound and file in ReCycle with the same
results)

Here's what I'm using:
ReCycle 2.1 build 229
Logic Pro 7.1.1
I'm on a G4, dual 1.25 GB
OSX 10.4.2
Lots of RAM, and the track I'm working on is in its infancy so not a lot of
CPU usage yet at all (and yes, yesterday's REX2 files were used in the same
track)

Any help is appreciated. I'm at a standstill here until I figure this one
out.

Thanks in advance ...

M
