Turn off patch view in arrange

Turn off patch view in arrange

2005-11-27 by Hans Hafner

Hi there,

since 7.1.1 we have the nice feature off showing the name of the
loaded patch in the arrange window.

But what if I would like to go back to viewing the instrument name
instead of the loaded patch? Sometimes I load something called Mellow
Strings and then distort the hell out of it so I would like to see
Dist Lead and not Mellow Strings.

Anybody found how to turn that off?

Thanks for the help

Cheers
Hans

You can always double-click and type over the default.
If you save your preset with a new name, it should update....

Thanks Colin,

what I wanna get back is the track showing the Audio Instrument
Objects name instead of the name of the loaded instruments.

I know I can name the track, but that means I need to from now on
name two things the same: the track and audio object. Does this make
sense? I didn't think so.

Cheers
Hans

I'm not sure exactly what the problem is. Just make sure your view
options in the arrange window are set to show instrument name. You
should then always see the name of the audio object in the track list.
Depending on zoom levels you will also see the loaded patch name. But
as long as the view is set to show the instrument name (as opposed to
showing the track name) you'll see the name of the audio object as
well.

Sorry, guys, you're not seeing what bothers me. I figured it out though.

You have to _turn off_ track names in the view menu of the arrange
window to make Logic 7.1.1 (!!) stop it from showing the loaded patch
on an EXS instrument.

This is bogus and totally stupid to change. I really despise the
programmers for changing these little things from version to version,
whatever disrupts the workflow we all got used to should only be
changed for very serious considerations.

Anyway, thanks for trying to help guys.

Cheers
Hans

Okay Hans, I see what you mean.....

Funny, I actually like it the new way as I always used to have to
type in the name of the patch. That's just the way I work. At least
there's a way around it.

See, and in the original question contained exactly that fact, that a
lot of times the patch doesn't have anything to do anymore with the
sound that's coming out of the instrument. That's why seeing the
patch isn't useful to me.

Thanks anyway.
Hans

If you enter a track name, it will replace the patch name in the
arrange window view.

I know, but will I then see the name in the track mixer? No unless I
rename the audio object, so I have to name something twice. Thank you
Apple for making me do this. I know it's not a big deal, it's just
very irritating when all of a sudden things you gotten used to are
changed.

Sorry guys, no offense, I know you're trying to help, but you're not
seeing the bigger picture.

Cheers

Yes, you will. There is a view option in the track mixer to display
track names.

Not necessary. Check out the local view menu in the track mixer.

But you do see my point about the feature that's making me change all
previous songs, don't you?

I know the behaviour changed from v. 6. Now it seems L7 fits in both an
instrument name and patch name/track name (if one exists) wherever
possible, depending on zoom levels. Personally like the new behaviour.
But regardless, you can still easily get what you are looking for.
Change it in your autoload once, and then you'll never have to think
about it again.

Sorry Eli,

something changed from 7.1 to 7.1.1 and that's what I'm talking
about. I did like the fact that at a certain zoom level I could see
both.

But in 7.1.1 it changed to _only_ displaying the patch name instead
of the audio object name.

Yes, I can change the autoload. Yes, I can flip three switches...
(switching the track and instruement in the view in the arrange and
then the one in the track mixer) I just don't consider it wise to
make me jump through this hoop.

The problem are the 50+ sketches that are lying around that I draw
upon from time to time. So now when I open them, I have to first take
a couple of minutes to figure out what is where.

And yes, it isn't such a big deal and from now on I'll just keep
quite about it.

Thanks
Hans

..... when only the "track name" setting is enabled in the arrange
window view menu? Or do you mean specifically in the track mixer? I
never compared it back to back with pre 7.1.1 versions. But I trust
what you say is correct. I think I do remember now that the track mixer
display conditions changed in 7.1.1; but I don't remember the arrange
display conditions changing.

Yeah, that is a drag. You could try importing the screen sets from your
current corrected autoload. But that's also a few additional steps you
would need to go through. Six of one, half a dozen of the other, as
they say.....

Ironically I had a client here today (I do some Logic instruction)
asking specifically about this behaviour. And I was sure glad that this
little thread had caused me to investigate it a bit more closely over
the last day or so than I had before ......
