Steinway meets EXS etc

2006-06-22 by Larry lewis

Hello EXS people,

Thanks for the responses to my letter re not being able to get Steinway
D to appear in EXS.

I figured it out - I had installed the 24 bit steinway only. When i, in
addition, installed the 16 bit Steinway in the proper place,
everything was available in EXS.

Now I'm using the "basic" Steinway OK.
It's "good" but not quite good enough. I think need to tweak some
parameters in EXS to get the richness i want. Also, it's a little too
dry to me. I tried adding Logic reverb and it seemed to kill the
presence a little.

Apart from that I'm having a ball with it.

If anybody out there has experience with PMI keyboards and can suggest
how-to-tweak, I'd like to hear from you.

Thanks,
larry

If cautious EQ'ing does not help more richness could mean a bit of
compression. The Logic compressor is quite good for small amounts on
natural instruments.

Regarding Logic reverbs: which one did you use? Space Designer should
work great. Maybe the Apple Matrix Reverb is clean enough, don't know.

If you want a third party synthetical reverb which is more or less
specialized on acoustical instruments you might try these two:

Ambience
Freeware, recommended from Garritan.

ArtsAcoustic Reverb
190 USD/EUR, very good for almost all natural sounds.

Btw - if you own Ozone, try its reverb on the piano. It is clean and
neutral.
